Looks great! Maybe Regina King has a chance for a nod. I’ve really loved her since her days on The Boondocks and Southland (plus her very underrated performance in Ray) and it’s awesome seeing her work with a director like Jenkins.

ok, so I really liked Moonlight but there were some things about its aesthetic that were very on-the-nose. The thing I liked least about Moonlight was Naomie Harris' way too overstated performance and how Jenkins heightened it even more with certain artistic decisions. It felt pretty obvious that the decision to include a shot of Harris noiselessly screaming at poor Chirone in slow-mo was made prior to it being shot because it was supposed to be a powerful image of this big emotional outburst, but it just felt melodramatic and artificial. Everything Jenkins did with that character I didn't like. And just from watching that trailer, I'm worried there's going to be a lot more of that this time around.

Certainly not on the same level as Moonlight's trailer (nothing from the last few years really is) but it indeed looks really great. I like that I still know basically nothing too important about the plot but this teaser gives the perfect feel for the aesthetic, the atmosphere, & the emotional energy of the film, all of which look absolutely on-point. At this point, this and BlacKkKlansman are the only two legitimate awards-hopefuls (I say "legitimate" because I'm not at all buying into the ambitious predictions for Roma) -- that we know of so far -- that I think actually look like something special, so I have really high hopes for this.

Gonna love it if awards season this year turns out to be a Lee vs Jenkins showdown. The trailer sells it as a more "standard" movie than Moonlight, but I still think it looks gorgeous.

BlacKkKlansman is a straight comedy with a dramatic montage attached at the end, and it isn't particularly memorable. I'm not sure how it's going to feature (outside of the Globes, perhaps). Beale Street legitimately looks like the favourite. Everything comes down to the way they push them, but, based on what's out there, there's no reason it shouldn't be another round of Jenkins versus Chazelle, with Jenkins' having the more meat of the two.

That new trailer is amazing. Barry Jenkins is such a talented filmmaker, and if this film is as good as the early reviews it looks like he has a long career of great work ahead of him. I'm especially impressed that stylistically it looks quite different from Moonlight. Best Director this year is going to be stacked. The Oscars majorly f**ked up by denying Jenkins a BD win for Moonlight in favor of Chazelle's "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??!!" showy shallowness. I'd love to see them make up for it next year, but at this point it still looks like Lee will take it. I wasn't the biggest fan of BlacKkKlansman (too Hollywood in its style, too safe in its political messages, especially compared to the far superior Sorry To Bother You), but I can't fault the Academy for wanting Spike Lee to be the first black recipient of Best Director as opposed to one of the newer filmmakers inspired by his legendary work from the 80s/early 90s. I'll just pretend it's a 30 years overdue Oscar for Do The Right Thing.
