Well , he's obviously not as talented and revered as his older brother Ralph but I've always enjoyed him as an actor . Gave splendid performances in both SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and ELIZABETH . Such a shame that his career never really took off in the sense that he could have become a more established actor / movie star but it's nice to see him having a comeback on TV in THE HANDMAID'S TALE . He's really good in that show .
FYI : Roman Polanski originally wanted him for the lead role in THE PIANIST but he had committed to theater work at the time.

I haven't seen The Handmaid's Take but he may have been really great in The Pianist - because he has a knack for sort of passive reactions which is perfect for that role where the character doesn't understand much of what he's being subjected to or what's happening or why.
I always think of him in the Merchant of Venice where he's fine and capable and seems like a movie star but that lead to absolutely nothing for him career wise - which surprised me a lot. He's almost 50 now and that's a weird thing for British actors who unlike Americans sometimes don't even get revved up until they TURN 50 for some reason.

Great in The Handmaids Tale.Always a bit surprised he never became a big star, there were rumors he was a bit difficult so maybe that had something to do with it.

On the basis of the few things I've seen him in, I think he's mostly crap, but I do agree with stabcaesar

I generally dislike him as an actor. He played Shakespeare but he got every single scene stolen by his co-stars (Paltrow, Dench, Firth), that must be a record. Thank God he didn't play Szpilman: as someone said above, he has that sort of distraught-puppy stare but he wouldn't be able to convey the vulnerability and aching sadness that Adrien Brody showed in The Pianist.
But he's good in The Handmaid's Tale, that is true. And he's hot.

He's good in The Handmaid's Tale, but I'd say he's the weakest link in the cast and can't make his Fred a compelling villain. Compared to the wonderful work Yvonne Strahovski delivers every week, he's one-note. Everytime he shares the screen with Strahovski and Moss, he's swallowed by both of them.
