Hayden Christensen in Shattered Glass. I was really shocked by how much I loved his performance because I really haven’t enjoyed him in anything else.
Also, Adam Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love is one of my favorite performances ever. I really wish he would work with PTA again because I hate virtually everything else Sandler does.

I am convinced that anyone can give a truly great performance under the right circumstances, but if they are generally crap, I don't give them points for getting it right once or twice.

Matthew Lillard in Twin Peaks. He was good in Scream as well, but that performance last year was a revelation.

Can Tommy Wiseau give a good performance directed by Martin Scorsese? I'm planning on watching The Room right after this post, so curious to see the response on this one. Edit: Welp, the movie is on Youtube and started fine, then turned into stills to avoid copyright. So neeeeevermind.

If used in the right way, why not?

He was better in The Wedding Singer, Funny People, and The Meyerowitz Stories tbh. This "Punch-Drunk Love is Sandler's only good performance" BS needs to end.

I did enjoy him in the Meyerowitz Stories and Funny People (never saw Wedding Singer), so in that sense I do agree with you, but I did say “virtually everything else Sandler does”, not “everything else Sandler does.” I think the reason why I mentioned him is because he is an actor who I generally HATE and while there are a few other films that I like him in quite a bit, Punch Drunk Love is a performance that I personally really love so it really stands out for me, even if it’s not his only good performance.

Fully agree with stephen I think every actor out there probably has one great performance in them.
