Overrated : a lot but Saving Private Ryan which turns back on itself in ways that are real life true (soldiers died for your/our freedom indeed) but dramatically false - the film's last scene is a gross and trite compromise of what came before
Underrated : Munich which looks more like a Coppola film from the 70s than his own work

Underrated: Generally speaking, probably still A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Munich, Minority Report, and Bridge of Spies would be close behind. Also want to give a shout-out to The Terminal.
Overrated: This is kinda hard. Spielberg's normally had problems in critical circles with his films being oversimplified and dismissed, especially since the turn of the century, so I find little issue with the films of his that have been canonized (I'm a stan of his, though, of course). I guess I'll go with Temple of Doom. It's the least celebrated of the original Indiana Jones trilogy, but it's still positively enough to be lumped in alongside them when I'd say it's not far off from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Munich for underrated. Yeah, it scored a bunch of nods... but it's almost unspoken of when in regards to Spielberg's best (alongside Schindler and Jaws).
Imma go Lincoln for overrated. There are movies of his I dislike more, but this got like 12 nods or something crazy like that.

Underrated: Bridge of Spies. It's acclaimed, but I consider it his second-best film behind Jaws, and it deserves a lot more praise than it gets, not only for its acting (which is phenomenal) but also how it feels so much like the Second Coming of Capra.
Overrated: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. It's not his worst by any stretch (War Horse and Temple of Doom exist), but I've never loved it.

Underrated: Empire of The Sun. Should be more well-known then it is. It's amazing, and Christian Bale gives one of the best child performances ever. I'll also add that his recent dramatic work is highly underappreciated by film fans. BOS, Lincoln, The Post are just as good as his 80's / 90's stuff, if you ask me.
Overrated: Close Encounters I suppose. Still an amazing accomplishment visually and film making-wise.

Underrated: Duel
Overrated: Close Encounters, I guess. I've only seen the whole thing straight through once and I've never really had a burning desire to revisit it.

I would probably go with E.T. for overrated. It's a tough call as there's a few could earn the title, but it doesn't hold up all that well at all for me once you hit puberty. I'd probably have Raiders as the closest competitor for the crown. I don't think it holds up to endless rewatches the way his best stuff does.
Underrated is another tough one. I think I'd go with Duel or Empire of the Sun, though they're obviously two which could fit into the category of underseen. I think Close Encounters is a film that doesn't get enough respect in the grand scheme of things, when you consider it's about as famous as anything he's done, because it's for sure as good as anything he's done.

Last Crusade is the best Indy film and I will die on that hill.

Underrated: Empire of the Sun. Overrated: Lots to choose from of his recent output, but I'll go with The Post.

Overrated- Gotta be SPR. There's some good stuff there, but it's a mess thematically and nothing after the big opening is really that good.
Underrated- Catch Me If You Can (maybe my second or third favorite from him) and I guess The Post since it became so fashionable to crap on it when it was out.

Underrated: • Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (only really gets bad in act 3, the rest is solid fun stuff) • The War of the Worlds
Overrated: • Ready Player One is just The Emoji Movie all over again • Saving Private Ryan has maybe three or four good scenes and then a bunch of junk in it
Both: • A.I. is on the good spectrum but I constantly read people go on and on about how underrated it is, to the point it goes full circle to overrated. Chill out about it.

Overrated: E.T., which I might call the most overrated film of all time.
Under: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull maybe. I thought about Duel, but I wonder if it's more underseen than underrated.

which I might call the most overrated film of all time. I think I'd go with one of these three: Forrest Gump, Black Swan, or Whiplash.
