It was decent(ish) I guess, but it didn't make me think about checking out the sequels, and as such it is the only Star Wars film I have seen.

I like the middle act with them running around with Princess Leia. The space battle never really works for me and that first act takes forever to get done. Really good movie star performance from Ford, though. I'd give it a 6/10. Empire was a huge improvement and I even like RotJ better.

Along with The Wizard of Oz, it's probably the most definitive iteration of the hero's journey on film and it pulls it off wonderfully. Every design element of the film is top notch and iconic for a reason, the work by John Williams is arguably the greatest score in film history, the characters all have their charm and the ensemble is very good (not enough people talk about how awesome Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin is), the editing and overall structure of the film is excellent, and George Lucas has some inspired moments behind the camera (the "Binary Sunset" scene and the X-Wings diving into the trenches of the Death Star stand out most notably to me). It's sterling production done in the service of a tried-and-true storytelling formula that introduces the audience into an incredibly inventive world inspired by the best of sci-fi and monster movies. I absolutely love it.
Note: I generally dislike the changes that came with the Special Edition and Lucas' subsequent retouches and exclusively watch the Despecialized Edition of the original trilogy. The Despecialized Edition is a fan restoration of the original trilogy that edits the Blu-Ray versions of the films using the 1993 LaserDisc for reference to undo all the changes to the film to restore it to their theatrical versions in HD. If anyone is interested in seeing the films this way, feel free to message me.

Good movie, bro. I like to think of it like this. Jaws may have invented the summer blockbuster, but Star Wars perfected it. Note: I generally dislike the changes that came with the Special Edition and Lucas' subsequent retouches and exclusively watch the Despecialized Edition of the original trilogy. This. So this.

In a way, this in 1977 came out of the blue, cemented the Summer holiday movie season as truly permanent, as Jaws had in 1975 previously greenlit, and it's just a compelling and ultimately joyous Sci-Fi adventure - 10/10
