Rewatched the film a couple of days ago and found it to be just kind of perfect. Is it in your top 10 of 2004? How much do you like it?
I love it enormously. The thing that immediately jumps out about it is just how wonderful the characters are and how much they feel like a true family. It's amazing that a bunch of pixels can feel as human and honest as they do, and the interactions between them are shining examples of great chemistry and great writing. I think the film is also very original and very funny when it comes to depicting the everyday life of superheroes - the sneaking away from the wives to do some hero stuff, the suffocating boring job Bob has to go to which literally and figuratively squeezes him down, the school problems the kids have and how the powers relate to them. Everything is just so well written. And the villain is highly memorable and all his plans and reasons to be a villain make absolute sense and actually relate to the characters too.
And it's one of the few times I nominate an animated film for Best Director too - I love the style which Bird brings to the table here, the energy and pace of the film, the great way he handles the domestic scenes, how he isn't afraid to slow things down a little in order to dive deeper into the characters, and how then he's able to create just the most exciting action sequences you can think of.
Noms/wins:
Best Picture (#4, The Aviator)
Best Director - Brad Bird (#4, Martin Scorsese, The Aviator)
Best Original Screenplay (#2, Kill Bill: Vol. 2)
Best Editing (#2, Kill Bill: Vol. 2)
Best Original Score (#4, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban)
Best Sound Mixing (#3, The Polar Express)
Best Sound Editing (#3, Spider-Man 2)
And if I had a Best Animated Film nomination it'd be an easy win. Seeing the sequel tomorrow and I'm incredibly excited.
