“Quiet! All of you! They’re approaching the Tyrannosaur paddock.”
I forgot this turned 25 recently. Since Fallen Kingdom comes out on Thursday, I’m watching the good ones leading up to it.
Park - 10 (but I think you knew that) World - 8/10 The Lost World - 4/10 3 - 2/10

1. Jurassic Park2. The Pete Postlethwaite scenes in The Lost World: Jurassic Park 3. Jurassic Park III4. Jurassic World 5. The rest of The Lost World: Jurassic ParkIt's remarkable how inconsistent this franchise is. And while I was really hyped over Jurassic World when it came out, the rewatch was incredibly unkind.

Jurassic Park - 10/10. A perfect thrill ride and I really like the meta aspects of the film commenting on technical achievement while the film itself is one. Jurassic World - 7/10. Not as fun as when I first saw it, but still good dumb fun and again I like some of the meta aspects of it even if it's a bit more cynical here. The Lost World: Jurassic Park - 5/10. Spielberg's worst film. Pete Postlethwaite and seeing the T. rex on the mainland are the only reasons to check it out, everything else is dumb and really mean-spirited (you can tell by the time they got to film that Spielberg wasn't into this anymore). Jurassic Park III - 2/10. Take all the stupid of The Lost World, have none of the redeeming qualities, take away all the high-end production value of the series, and insert a director who even on his best day (the underrated The Rocketeer) still is not as visually inventive as a bored Spielberg.

1. Jurassic Park - 10. The film that got me into films, and one that still holds up enormously even if I try and think about it without seeing it through my love-filled childhood glasses. A film that perfectly captures the wonder of seeing and experiencing something truly astonishing (something that none of the sequels were able to replicate), and one that is just one of the most exciting and thrilling entertainments in history.
2. The Lost World: Jurassic Park - 7. It is indeed among the lesser of Spielberg's films, and it really feels that he wasn't really much into it all, but the man is pretty much incapable of making a bad movie so even on autopilot he's doing some pretty strong work. I like this as a piece of primal entertainment - it's all about the jungle, the chases and the monsters, and I think it's quite enjoyable on that level. It's got some cool setpieces, great effects and fine spectacle. What it lacks is that heart and soul that made the first one so special.
3. Jurassic Park III - 7. I'm in full agreement with Ebert on this one - it's just a real solid 90-minute B-movie thrill ride. This has even less of a story than "The Lost World" and seems to exist purely to be a monster chase movie, but I think it works well as one. The dinosaur effects are great (when these new movies talk about how much practical stuff they use, it's all bullshit in comparison with the original trilogy - in this film the blend of great CG and great animatronics is seamless and amazing) and I'm not even that annoyed by the characters. It's always nice to see Sam Neill kick ass.
4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - 7. A spectacularly silly movie that is pretty much a huge-budget version of those direct-to-video sci-fi films from the 90s that is damn good fun. Brought back a lot of childhood memories since it has all the shit I used to love in movies when I was a kid - dinosaurs, volcanoes, destruction. Bayona has plenty of fun with the schlock of it all and even though it seems like the franchise has gone in some real weird directions, I think this movie works because it does have personality and it is fun.
5. Jurassic World - 6. The only film of the franchise that I'm not too fond of. I just think that it's so damn generic and forgettable, even though nothing about it offends me or makes me hate it. It's just meh. And even with that in mind I'm leaning towards the positive side of 'meh'. The most disappointing thing about it is honestly the effects which are the most cartoonish of the entire franchise.

Park - 8.5 / 10 Lost World - 7.5 / 10 World - 7 / 10 III - 5 / 10
For as much as people like to shit on the sequels, I really don't think they're all that bad.
