Yea I know this one was controversial especially on IMDB boards. Personally having just rewatched the film it really is a phenomenally acted piece of entertainment. It doesn’t add up to much in the end but I had a blast watching it.

Still pretty meh.
Thankfully after five years I've forgotten most of it.

Renner was very good, the costumes are snazzy and solid, and De Niro's one-scene wonder is the best thing he's done since Jackie Brown. But everything else bottoms out as a cut-rate version of a cut-rate version of a lesser Scorsese joint. Bale's the best of the main four but his character is such a bloody bore who barely makes much of an impression one way or the other, but at least he isn't as offensive as the other three. Bradley Cooper's character is impossible to take seriously as a person with any kind of authority, and his various tics are irritating rather than charming. Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams are both so hideously miscast, bringing out the absolute worst tendencies in the both of them that neither one had ever showcased except when David O. Russell was involved.

Script is nonexistent and the ensemble isn't exactly the type to be able to make up a narrative on the spot, especially Jennifer Lawrence who was all over the place with none of those creative decisions coming even remotely close to being okay. There are a few decent scenes throughout and the film looks nice and does a solid job presenting the era, but it's all in service of a directionless piece of junk food masquerading as a peak-Scorsese film with its editing, use of voice over, and really obvious song choices. I can get why someone would like it, but the fact that critics were over the fucking mood for it was baffling, especially since I don't think I read a single review articulate any bit of praise more perceptive than saying the film had energy. Sure, but for what?
The movie did have Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence looking hot as hell and kissing in one scene, though, so I can't say that energy was all for nothing.

I don't outright hate it but it's really not that good. Extremely heavy-handed (typical O. Russell) and the cast was collectively pretty annoying, with the worst being Jennifer Lawrence. None of them should've been nominated (though I don't consider Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and JLaw the worst nominee of their category that year. The title belongs to Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill and Lupita Nyong'o, respectively).
I still prefer it a great deal more to The Wolf of Wall Street, though. It's at least somewhat watchable.

I like plenty of bad films, or films that people would say are bad - exploitation, grade Z level stuff, you name it.
But one thing I don't usually like are what nowadays I literally call "American Hustle type films" - and I actually like AH because I'm generous - I like Bale (starts of weak, ends up strong), Renner, Lawrence, I like De Niro's scene etc. But, and this is crucial but:
I hate this type of film because the movie has no reason to exist except to "entertain" in some weirdly non-descriptive, and fake way, it has no narrative thrust or reason for me to care about - and I just told you I go out of my way to care in almost all films. William Friedkin once said movies can only exist for 3 reasons - make you laugh, cry, or to scare the hell out of you. I'd go along with that and add a 4th.........to make you think.
There is nothing going on like that here - it's 0 for 4 - It's utter BS, it's product pure and simple.
The noted film critic, David Denby wrote a hilariously off-base rave review of this film that is mind-boggling to me. Worth reading for a laugh to see how far film, film criticism, film culture has gone off the rails.

I've still only seen it the one time five years ago and I never plan to re-visit it. I don't think there's a single film that talked me to death more than that one. It would just never shut up. The way that it totally loses hold of its narrative in the latter half in particular is utterly disastrous. I've really never seen such an epic dumpster-fire from a film so technically well-composed. And basically the entire cast is grating beyond belief. Absolutely hated it and afterwards I'm in no rush to watch another O. Russell film.

The movie is a blast. People call it "Scorsese-lite" but that is kind of ridiculous. It's more of a winking tribute to Scorsese's style inside of a goofball, Ocean's Elevenish ball of entertainment. The hatred baffles me.

I still really love the ensemble (Cooper is great, you heathens), minus Lawrence who was laughably miscast.
Though my latest watch made me aware of some glaring flaws, I still like it. Far from perfect, but I don't think it's worth the hate thrown its way... nor all the accolades either.

I don't have the flaming darts hate for it that a lot of people on here do, but it's just so fluffy and average. I liked the Bale/Adams relationship, but everything else about it was just okay. Also I think this is the movie that ingrained JLaw in my head as being hyperirritating, she's not nearly this bad in anything else. It does come off like a cheap Scorsese imitation, as others have pointed out.

The hatred baffles me. Yes! I think the Ocean's Eleven comparison is more appropriate. Other than the 70's setting, I don't think it's really trying to be a Scorsese wannabe.

I've always been pretty baffled as to why this particular film has gotten so much hate online despite being so admired by the critics. It's just such a strange split of opinions. As to the film itself, I love it. I never really felt that there was that much Scorsese here tbh - he and Russell have such separate styles of cinematography and editing that it always felt like a Russell film to me and nothing other than that. I love it for taking that true story and not turning it into an Argo-like bit of safe Hollywood storytelling but for turning the real story into a foundation for the main thing which is these tremendously entertaining characters that are perfectly cast and perfectly played. The performances are flamboyant, big and very enjoyable with every character leaving a mark. I love how they interact, I love the kinda loose nature of the storytelling here, I love the energy and the humor. The only thing that is a bit disappointing here is probably the very ending, and for one simple reason - it kinda feels like the movie just stops instead of the ending leaving a strong impression. But other than that I really love this. It's a great film about people trying to connect by all means they can - disguises, costumes, stings, betrayals, etc.

Soundtrack and production design were both great, so it was an excellent film visually. It lacked a gravitas and a depth which I was expecting.
