I like Hammer's performance in the film - this isn't meant to be a critique of his work. It's more a discussion about the appropriateness of his casting. At the age of 31 (at the time of the film's release) and standing at 6'5", do you think, visually, he was the right counterpart for Timothée Chalamet (aged 21 and 5'11½")? My choice for Oliver would be Austin Butler, the young actor who's currently starring opposite Denzel Washington in the Broadway revival of 'The Iceman Cometh' - a performance for which he's earned critical raves. Prior to this, he was probably most famous for starring in the CW 'Sex and the City'-prequel 'The Carrie Diaries.' Born in 1991, Butler would have been just the right age at the time of filming and at 6'0" would be much closer to Chalamet's height. What do you think - any casting suggestions?

Can't imagine anyone else in the role.

I'd've given RPatz a shot at the role. I think he could've done really interesting things with it.

I really like Hammer's performance. He and Chalamet have lots of chemistry. But Oliver's supposed to be a college student, right? So the actors in their mid-to-late 20s that I could think could play that part are Bill Skarsgard, Aaron Johnson and George McKay.

Someone unheard of like Chalamet before this movie came out.

HELENA MARIA - Flattery will get you everywhere. Tommen_Saperstein - In a way, I agree - I really do like Hammer's work here. I just think that optically, his pairing with Chalamet was a little "off." That could just be me, though. Allenism - I'm not as sold on Pattinson's abilities as you are - and I do think I would prefer an American actor in the role. theycallmemrfish - Not even a little bit funny. bob-coppola - Eh... Not sure I see any of them here. And to echo what I said earlier, I really do think this role should be played by an American. stabcaesar - Austin Butler would fit this criteria!

Austin Butler would fit this criteria! He looks Chalamet's age. Oliver would have to look older. Someone like a young Jude Law.

Freddie Prinze Jr.
But I think the casting of Armie Hammer brought a lot of dynamic to the character and the relationship. Not in a positive way, but in a way that makes for a complex theme.
If you'd want to cast someone younger and change the film to something more palatable and straight-up romantic (as opposed to tragic as it is with Hammer), I might say Nick Robinson I suppose?

Armie was definitely definitely too old for the role and unfortunately his presence in the film will always stain it, like Kevin Spacey in American Beauty.
I probably would've called Austin Butler too c-list in 2017 but in hindsight he probably would've been a decent choice. Though I think they would've gone with someone with more marketability (which is why Armie was cast).
I think Logan Lerman would've made sense, coming off Indignation (and most famous for Wallflower and Percy Jackson). He's also Jewish like the character, looks like the part is described, and would've come off more layered and mischievous and less predatory than Armie did.

Back in the 90's : I was thinking him too... but who would you have picked for Chalamet? Ethan Hawke?

cherry68 HELENA MARIA - Ethan Hawke and Jude Law? Now that would have been hot. Oh, and the acting would have been good, too.

first person to come to mind with the combination of godlike good looks and talent is Oscar Isaac. He might've been too old when they were shooting, but Oliver being older was part of what made it hot anyway.

Ethan Hawke is actually 2 years older than Jude Law. Back in the 90's , I think either Joseph Gordon Levitt or Heath Ledger would have been interesting picks as Elio.
