This is a tough question because film work tends to overwhelm TV if you are really famous - I think its people who aren't big stars that you see it more Jeffrey Wright maybe or Bobby Cannavale or Laurie Metcalf maybe?

I don't know if I would describe most of the people mentioned here as EQUALLY famous. Certainly not the likes of George Clooney, Bruce Willis or Johnny Depp, or most of the big stars that first make their name on TV (Will Smith is the one that comes the closest, outside of the US at least). There's also actors that became known for cinema first, but I think they are more famous for their TV work now (the Sheens, Kiefer Sutherland).
(Almost) equally famous I'd say:
Michael J. Fox (although with an edge for cinema) Steve Carrell Sean Bean Ron Howard (in the US, internationally he's more known for his film work)

As big as ER was back in the day, I'd say just about everyone now thinks of Clooney as a film leading man first. No way are Fresh Prince/Moonlighting/21 Jump Street even as close to as big as Smith/Willis/Depp's film roles.
Carrell, Kiefer Sutherand, and Aniston were good picks. Martin Sheen's a tough one. Apocalypse Now may push his film career sightly ahead notability wise but it's close.
If we're just going by acting, Ron Howard is more known for Opie than anything else, but if you include his directing most people probably think of that first when they hear his name these days.

Surely if you ask people my age or my parents', they remember Ron Howard for Happy days first (and we live in Europe). I saw Michael J Fox in a sitcom for years as well, but I guess younger people remember him mostly for movies.

I don't agree with most of the names brought up in this thread, but you got it right with Jessica Lange, Melissa McCarthy, Steve Carrell, Alec Baldwin, Will Smith and Taraji P. Henson. Other people are indeed famous, but mainly for one medium, or not that famous at all.
I'd say Allison Janney and J. K. Simmons fit the group as well.
