I mean, I guess my reaction toward the trailer has softened a bit since showing it to me brother. It looks good, but I'm still a bit wary. The Nolan comparisons aren't lost on me, I just hope this thing has the technical grandeur of a Nolan film and nothing else. That'd be fantastic. Don't let me down, Damien! just remember where Nolan is God, Chazelle is Vice God

Interesting trailer, in that it's all quite stupidly overly dramatic considering we know it works out.
I've recently come around in a big way to films related to space, and I've been a Gosling fan for over a decade now, so I want this to be great and I want him to be great. I do think the film will be a solid stuff or better (fingers crossed), and I hope Gosling will kill it, but he doesn't always, so who knows. I just don't see this being anywhere near my favourite films of 2018, and it barely rates as something I'm anticipating or excited for.

"When the Canadian actor was asked if the film deliberately took the focus away from US patriotism, he said the achievement 'transcended countries and borders,' according to the newspaper."Sounds good to me. Leave the smarmy patriotism to Peter Berg and Clint Eastwood.

I'm getting echoes of "Three Billboards is pro-racism", only on the opposite end of the spectrum.
I don't see how this is at all a problem.

I doubt this'll be better than Space Cowboys.

Leave the smarmy patriotism to Peter Berg and Clint Eastwood. yeah I read Gosling's quote which is fine & all but man, that flag plant was such an ICONIC moment. I'm not even one of those overly patriotic "America FUCK YEAH!" type of people either lol. Keep in mind, I'll see be seeing this film opening night for sure.

So this flag controversy is not dying down. Has anyone actually seen the movie?

Let's be real, Trump wouldn't have even known about this movie if not for the controversy.

I remember on Letterboxd there was a review that said “this is “blue lives matter” and “gender equality mean you can punch girls too” cinema.“ I guess they were offended that Frances McDormand kicked both a boy and girl in the groin. Another review called it “copaganda” repeatedly because I guess they thought their play on words was the most clever thing ever. Letterboxd seems predominantly left-wing so I don’t expect there’ll be many similar reviews for First Man on there, but right-wing twitter is already outraged and seem to be under the impression that the US flag doesn’t appear in the film at all.

I'm pretty confident that that's the reason why nearly every article I'm coming across these days about First Man uses the same still of Gosling with a gigantic American flag behind him instead of the first few stills that Universal put out.
