A very intelligent, poetic actor - I think that she rounds out the trio that includes Kirsten Dunst and Samantha Morton as the greatest actresses of their generation. She's a great interviewee, too - very grounded and intelligent. I particularly enjoyed this interview she gave to the CBC - she openly discusses her depression after leaving 'Almost Famous' (the uncertainty about her career trajectory after burning those bridges, etc.) and how 'The Thin Red Line' helped her start her healing process. You certainly understand why she chose to forego Hollywood fame for a modest living in Canada (she has cited her idol Julie Christie's farm in Wales as an inspiration) - I mean, Kate Hudson has been hounded by the paparazzi every single day since that film opened. But it's tough for a cinephile to see such a great actor not use her tremendous talents. Not that she isn't a great writer and director - I love her work behind the camera, too! How about you? Fun fact: Both Keira Knightley and Michelle Williams (whom she later directed in 'Take This Waltz') have cited her as their primary inspiration to act. How cool is that for someone as young as she is?

not super impressed with her acting (it's serviceable not memorable), but Away from Her is fantastic, and it's even more impressive that she directed it at such a young age. Really hope she gets back in that chair.

Decent director, pretty good child actress, hasn't really done a whole hell of a lot of late to really endear herself to me as one of the greats.

She'll always have a special place in my heart for Road to Avonlea. She was really great there, I especially loved the When She Was Bad, She Was Horrid episode where she played an evil twin. Super dependable child star, especially in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Lantern Hill. Transitioning to older roles was never more uncomfortable than The Sweet Hereafter, but I think she's great in Go and Splice, and she's decent in Guinevere, Slings & Arrows, The Weight of Water, My Life Without Me and The Secret Life of Words ( Beowulf & Grendel is super heinous though). Overall, I love the quiet confidence she brings to all her roles. She has good chemistry with her co-stars and she's tackled interesting material behind the camera. Fun fact, she's a close friend of one of my school friends and babysat her kids.

She was one of the best young actresses that there was, and it's so sad she all but packed it in for life behind the camera. I say that primarily because I'm pretty up and down on her career as a director. Not the outright winner she was in front of the camera.
