I.e. The actors who have been great on multiple occasions but are generally cast in (supporting) roles that never garner male actors career benefits. Here are my choices: Keith Carradine Kyle Chandler Peter Gallagher Bruce Greenwood James Marsden Sam Neill Tom Skerritt Constantly employed, yes, but always under the radar of a "big" career. Hopefully the criteria make sense.

Out of those ones probably Sam Neill just purely for Jurassic Park and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

I don't think I've seen or remember enough of them to make an actual ranking, but I'll try
1. Kyke Chandler: he's been great a few times and deserves to have a least one Oscar nod. I don't have him in any of my line-ups, but the Academy screws up so many thing, why don't they just give him a nomination? 2. Sam Neill 3. Peter Gallagher: I don't think he's that good, but I'll always have tenderness for him as he is the father of Seth fucking Cohen 4. James Marsden: until Westworld, I thought he was only a pretty face.

Michael Freaking Stuhlbarg. The man's in everything, but hasn't had a lead role (to my knowledge) since A Serious Man, and he's never given a bad performance.

Barry Pepper - he should have played the lead in The 25th Hour specifically - you'd buy him every second that you don't buy Norton (no one agrees with this but I'm serious).

Most of my first thoughts on this have been mentioned, but I'll second Fred Ward and I'll add Cillian Murphy who is never less, and usually a lot more than reliable.

Stuhlberg to me is the new Paul Giamatti who I sometimes, (ok, often lol) call America's most overrated actor - don't get me wrong, I like him and Giamatti too - but sometimes the level of acclaim is disparate to the work so far - Giamatti has now transcended that and is a quasi-star but for a long time he was basically "fat schlubby dude - love him!" and Stuhlberg is now something like "oh he's THAT guy I didn't recognize him - oh yeah he's awesome!"
What has he actually done on film - I love him in A Serious Man and he was great in his one CMBYN scene but those are you know, a freakin' Coens lead and a one other skillfully written scene that a lot of actors could have aced -and its a single scene! - he was very fortunate to be in either, at all. Now, I know he's a fine actor, I'm just saying I don't know why people are impressed by him really just yet and think of him as dependable or think of him at all - I know he's well on his way and that's cool but the discussion around him is weird to me.

No one's saying he's the greatest actor, but a) he's in a lot of stuff mostly as a supporting player and b) he always gives consistent performances. I for one would like to see him in land more significant roles so that we can see more of his talent.
