Well, since I totally missed this as it was happening, here's another long list of my thoughts as I scroll through each category:
Soundtrack - Sweet, I assume it's four because of a tie and it was only three allowed correct? Well these are four pretty sweet choices, especially love that
Call Me by Your Name made it (I'm sure it was mostly because Sufjan, who I love anyway, but the whole soundtrack is blissful). Wish more people had seen
The Seeker or
Patti Cake$ but oh well.
Sound categories - Nothing terrible about these, but I have no idea how
Good Time missed Sound Mixing...
Score - Wish
A Ghost Story had made it, but I'm not mad.
Good Time and
Phantom Thread being there makes up for the (I get I'm in the minority here) horrendous
Dunkirk score. Though
BR 2049's score is growing on me.
Song - Oh damn, 4/5 with my song choices! The only one not in my five was "Visions of Gideon" but I ain't mad because I love Sufjan and it's still a beautiful song. Again, wish there was more love for
Patti Cake$ here.
Animated - Sure. I mean, to me there's
Coco then everything else anyway. And I didn't even consider
Coco top 20 of the year. So that says a lot.
Documentary - Fuck yeah!
The Work! Ya'll need to see this if you haven't yet. It'll absolutely wreck you in the most beautiful way possible. Still need to see all the rest except
Icarus (which, as a film, was alright).
Foreign - And again I need to see
Thelma. Really want to, though, so that's not a bad thing.
On Body and Soul should win, though. I mean,
Loveless and
A Fantastic Woman, and even
The Square, are great films, but
On Body is just beautiful.
Debut Feature - Lol, love the Photoshop job. Peele's easily winning this, but kind of wish any of the three I voted for here gave it a run for its money (
Hounds of Love, Raw, Ingrid Goes West).
Makeup - At least we did better than the Academy.
I, Tonya is whatever, but the rest should've been nominated in the first place.
Performer - Solid list. Stuhlbarg should win, though I know Chalamet probably will.
Choreography - Good stuff, even if
The Last Jedi seems ehh.
VFX - There's
Apes and
BR 2049, then there's everything else as far as I'm concerned. Wish
Logan had gotten more love here as a whole, though, not just with our awards.
Editing - Hell yeah. Take out
Dunkirk and put in
LA 92 and that's my line-up. Should be
Good Time's to lose, though.
Costume - This is easily
Phantom Thread's, but glad that 6 made it and I like them all. Wish
Wonder Woman got more love here.
Production Design - Ya'll should definitely watch
Dave Made a Maze, if only because it may be my win in this category for the decade. The movie itself sucks, though. But damn if the Production Design isn't incredible, especially hearing the director talk about the process in a Q&A after and for being so low-budget. Not a bad line-up though, and
Blade Runner 2049 should win this.
Cinematography -
It Comes at Night and
A Cure for Wellness would have been great inclusions here, but all of the nominees are great. And they're all gonna lose to Deakins anyway, as they should.
Adapted -
The Death of Stalin is a totally surprising inclusion. Still need to see it.
BR 2049 should win, though.
Original - Lol @
Three Billboards, but that's expected. None of my five made it, though, which is sad.
Ensemble - Way to go on
It which is the only one of my five to make it, but certainly not upset about the rest (even if
Three Billboards is whatever only because it's hard to nominate an ensemble that has Abbie Cornish's god-awful performance in it).
Supp. Actress - Hell yeah! Thanks for the videos
stephen!! I love that everyone here is so on board with
Blade Runner 2049 like me, and Ana De Armas is great, but I'd prefer Sylvia Hoeks in the same film and even then I put 14 others above her. Sad there's no Sophia Lillis (who gives probably my favorite performance of the year), Tatiana Maslany, Raffey Cassidy, Rooney Mara, etc. But oh well. I'm not mad about the rest, except I still don't get the love for Manville at all.
Supp. Actor - I think Hammer is okay, but I can live with it because this line-up is glorious. Keoghan and Stewart are my #1 and #2 respectively, and Keoghan is #1 by a long shot, so I'm so glad they both made it. Wish Will Poulter and Algee Smith (hell,
Detroit in general, even if the film itself has a ton of issues) got more love, but that's alright. Really need to see
Death of Stalin.
Actress - Strong line-up and love the use of Desplat's music too. Krieps is easily the best part of
Phantom Thread that it's not even funny, and I'm glad she made it. Even if Robbie is the only one from my 7 to make it.
Actor - Uhh, no Kaluuya? What the hell? Surprised that
Get Out got practically nothing this whole ceremony actually... That's a shame. Don't love it like crazy, but it was the best of the Oscar BP nominees that's for sure. And Kaluuya was outstanding (my #3 of the year). Glad Jackman made it, though. Wish Andy Serkis (my #1) got in. Also surprised Gosling didn't get in considering the wave of love for
Blade Runner 2049 here, though he doesn't even make my top ten (and I say that as Gosling fan #1).
Director - Denis Villeneuve is all that matters here, and I hope he wins. Surprised by the lack of Safdie bros and Edgar Wright, though, honestly. Pretty dull line-up.
Picture - Hell yes,
stephen. Thanks for using my favorite track from Vangelis'
Blade Runner score (even though I know it's the re-worked version from
2049). Beautiful note to end on. Pretty predictable line-up, pretty boring really, but so long as
BR 2049 wins I don't even care. Also weird that
Good Time was really unloved by you guys here, but
Three Billboards was.
Anyway, thanks
Viced for putting this on for us! Can't wait to see the results!
