I have to say that I'm surprised by the middling response this film has received - I really loved it. It feels very cinematic despite being an adaptation of such a well-worn stage classic - the score is lush and the cinematography is just stunning. Everyone in the cast is stellar, but I was particularly taken with Annette Bening's Arkadina - hilarious, of course, but what's most interesting are the glimpses of casual cruelty she provides. Quite spine tingling, really. Elisabeth Moss and Corey Stoll were also standouts.
I can't imagine this not appearing on my list of 10 favorites of 2018.

Ryan_MYeah - She was good! She definitely captured Nina's schoolgirl naïveté quite effectively.

I liked this way more than I thought I would just based on the trailer. This was impeccably shot, some clearly inspired by Lubezki which is always a plus. This was really funny too. I felt the story needed a bit more developing, I wasn't invested in the tragic elements of this as I was in the funny bits. I have a couple more iterations of this to watch this weekend for comparisons sake. Stoll & Moss were standouts for me. Saoirse was just good, but just ok for my standards for her which are always incredibly high, except for her final scene which was almost at the level of her Brooklyn brilliance. Bening was just fine nothing was added or detracted. The structure really was unexpected, I felt with how they had the opening scene it was framed in a different light by cutting dialogue in key instances. Where it seems that Nina knocking on his door provided him inspiration to write his play, but placed in the correct chronological order of events it proved to have a different affect on me for obvious reasons. Really good. Some of my pet-peeves that characters do were evident throughout thus knocking it a bit. 7/10
