Anyone else feel kind of flabbergasted but in a good way although you’re still not quite sure if what they do in this movie works, but you’re okay with it?
That’s me being very vague because I just got out of the movie and I don’t have time for full spoilers. I just wasn’t expecting there to really be.. spoilers.
Charlize is Oscar worthy though. I’m banking on a Globe nomination but I’ll stan for the Oscar. It’s equally on par with Young Adult for her, although this will probably please more audiences than Young Adult did.

Yeah that was basically my reaction. Never woulda seen that coming but I was okay with how it was handled. Charlize and Mackenzie are magnificent.

This is one of my most anticipated movies of the year. The Reitman/Theron/Cody reunion is something I always long for.

Similar. Although, my feelings are more complicated. It’s so much more low key than I expected. To the point that it feels very nothing... and yet, I appreciated that. It felt uneventful, and yet it felt potent, if that makes any sense. And both Theron and Davis are A+.
it just solidified my choice to never have children, too.

Damn, I had little interest in this beforehand (outside of Theron and Davis' performances) but the reviews so far seem promising and keep hinting at The Big Twist that's got me intrigued.

Funny thing, after I got home, I finally watched Fate of the Furious (Charlize double feature). She’s way too convincing as conniving evil bitch.

Charlize was phenomenal... was enjoying the movie for a while, but the twist just didn't work for me. I'm not sure what else they could have done to wrap up the story and make the whole thing seem worth it..... but idk... there had to have been something better than that. 6.5/10

I think it's fascinating that Diablo Cody wrote a rather grounded pregnancy-centric story with characters who are so ludicrously outsized to be wholly unbelievable ten years ago, and now she's written the complete inversion of it here, with some of the most lived-in and realistic characters I've seen in a very long time while dealing with a premise that goes a bit too far into the realm of the fanciful. Charlize Theron is brilliant, miles better here than her previous offering with Reitman. Mackenzie Davis is charm incarnate, playing the sort of role Zooey Deschanel would've made her mainstay (and likely run into the ground) while keeping from falling into the typical traps that plague that character archetype. Ron Livingston was also very good as well. I wasn't crazy about the reveal, but if one focuses on just the day-to-day interactions of the characters and the extraordinary realism Theron brings to the role, it's the best thing Reitman has done since Thank You for Smoking.

despised Juno (mainly because it was nominated for so many damn Oscars that year while Jesse James & Zodiac didn't get shit) but overall Cody definitely has talent. Need to see this for sure.

Just saw this and mostly liked it, though I don't think the reveal at the end entirely works. I do think it's funny that early on Marlo comments that the night nanny will result in a Hand that Rocks the Cradle-esque situation that leaves her with a cane at the end of the movie and then she actually does have a cane at the end because of the car crash

I admit I wasn't interested in the film from the trailer, but I keep seeing so many raves for my girl Charlize. Is she really as good as the critics are saying?

It's not quite at the level of Imperator Furiosa or Aileen Wuornos (though I rate both of those as all-timers), but I think she beats the hell out of her Young Adult performance here and I'd definitely classify it in her Top 5, if not Top 3. If she isn't in my lineups by year's end, I count it as a strong year for the category.

So I was excited to see if this was a good film or more of a vehicle for a great Charlize Theron performance; turns out it was both. I can't empathize too heavily with the problems of a majorly downtrodden mother of three young children; I mean I have actual problems, like what to give my sound editing win in 1944, these are the things that keep me awake at night; seriously though, with a character this well written and performed it's very easy to sympathize. Theron is incredibly powerful here, whether she's slumped half asleep in a chair, screaming at an asshole principal or moshing to smelly rock, you feel her every high and low. It really is powerful stuff from her. I hope Oscar remembers. The film itself was pretty tight stuff, making me laugh a lot and hitting you in the feels sporadically enough that it was never too much in terms of verging on the gaudily optimistic or the unnecessarily grim. The big 'surprise' was a little overly foreshadowed, taking the power out of it a bit and Ron Livingston's character could have done with a little more depth, but overall this was a great little movie.

Charlize keeps giving us all these opportunities to finally give her her much deserved second Oscar and we keep wasting all of them, smdh
I'm still not 100% sure if the reveal worked for me but I was a crying speechless mess after it ended, so I guess yes?

The Academy's still on notice for snubbing her in 2015 while letting Lawrence and Blanchett in. By the by, if you wanna see a completely different side to Charlize from her Tully turn, immediately watch Gringo.

It was fine. The idea behind it is interesting and offers the potential for an interesting character portrait. Most of the time that was also very well executed by director Jason Reitman. The film lives mostly from two great performances it offers. First of all we have Charlize Theron who once again went through a tough physical transformation for her role. She really played it well and absolutely believable. Theron understands very well to portray the ups and downs, the depressions and different emotions of her character. One of the best performance of her in recent years. A great revelation was Mackenzie Davis in the title role. She is seemingly the opposite of Theron's character but there is more to it and she wonderfully plays the free spirited and quirky nanny Tully. A performance that also works on different layers. The rest of the cast is fine and servable but not really outstanding. The screeplay works although I hoped for more bite in the dialagoue especially considering it is written by Diablo Cody. All in all a good character dramedy, could have been better in a few aspects but generally enjoyable enough.
Current nominations:
Best Actress in a Leading Role: Charlize Theron Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Mackenzie Davis*
Rating: 7/10

I liked it more than I thought I would, and it feels like a considerable step up for both Reitman and Cody. It also benefits from Theron turning in one of her most natural leading performances. She really sells Marlo’s spiraling despair without resorting to cheap histrionics. Davis is a shaft of light in just the right way, and she effortlessly fills out and grounds her character even as her existence becomes less and less literal . I know the twist is a bit divisive but for me it works, even if I think the last few scenes could’ve used some re-tooling.
