Thoughts on "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (2012)?

Amour is my favorite of that year, but this is such a close second. I can't imagine a film being any more poetic or open-hearted or original. And of course Wallis gives one of the strongest child performances of all time. I'm still in shock that Zeitlin was nominated - how's that for inspired? His dexterity with Wallis and his passionate world building were just too great to be denied. 

Besides acting of the main two and production values, which are brilliant, I thought it was boring and I basically hated it. But it's one of those films I feel I should have liked. Maaaaybe a rewatch could change that.

For all of the hoopla that surrounded Wallis' performance, I thought she was handily upstaged by her co-star. And it's not like I have an aversion to child performances, but to me the film features a lot of other things more worthy of discussion. And a part of me may still be a bitter that she got in over Cotillard.
