7 episodes in and I’m enjoying this quite a bit. Jeff Daniels is great as usual, I’m happy to see Bill Camp still getting work and Peter Sarsgaard brings a lot of authenticity to his dickhead character. But I definitely gotta give a shoutout to Tahar Rahim. I’ve never actually seen A Prophet and now I really want to because he’s excellent as Ali Soufan, a Muslim-American FBI agent. There’s a very natural likability to him and he never feels like he’s trying too hard. The script is pretty consistently engaging and doesn’t feel reliant on being flashy and the whole look at pre 9/11 terrorism is fascinating. I’ll be curious if this will get any recognition at the Emmys, since they were able to recognize Hulu last year with The Handmaid’s Tale.

So evidently nobody else watches this, but after the finale, I just gotta say that Tahar Rahim deserves to be a serious Emmy contender. His work in the finale gave one of the most powerful scenes I can think of in recent tv history. There’s an interrogation scene where he is so good at making you empathize with the anger and pain he’s feeling.

I read a few reviews of it when it started, and they all just convinced me to buy the book instead. I watched the first episode, but I can't say it especially hooked me, which was disappointing because it sounds like the kind of thing I love. Anyway, the book has a great cover. I wish I was a quicker reader so I could get around to sooner. Would definitely, definitely recommend A Prophet, as he's great in that/it's great in general, and I know Emmy's were kind to Transparent, so doesn't seem like they have an issue with Amazon.

This is the first thing I’ve seen him in.

Yeah, apparently the first 10 chapters of the book deal with the rise of Islamic fundamentalism which sounds pretty fascinating, although I understand why they'd cut that stuff out for the sake of creating a more consistent narrative for the show. Definitely hope to find time to read the book. Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the first episode more. I do think it gets better as the O'Neill and Soufan characters are further fleshed out, but I'm also saying this as someone who liked the first episode (even if in hindsight, it was mostly set-up).

three eps in. Not totally digging Daniels in this. He's fine for the most part I guess, doing the kind of performance he's done for the last several years, but he's had at least a couple moments where his outburts are laughably over the top. That might have more to do with the writing and editing, but still, it ain't cute. Couple other minor grievances: - Don't care about Bill Camp - The writing has been really cheesy in a couple places - Don't have time for Tahar Rahim's relationship troubles - That slow-mo montage set to Arabic hip-hop in ep 2 was...a choice. - Speaking of Tahar Rahim, I know that he's playing a real person and I'm not sure how close the book's interpretation is to real life, but there's something about Rahim's character that feels disingenuous, like he was written for the benefit of a white liberal audience. I'm only three eps in so we'll see, and I hope I'm wrong about this, because I'd hate for his character to just be "that Muslim FBI agent who hates Al-Qaeda." What I like: - There's been some terrific, very tense moments - I like the head-butting between Jeff Daniels and Peter Sarsgaard - Peter Sarsgaard is KILLING it. This is how you do an antagonist (I'm looking at you, The Terror). He's a smarmy, arrogant little bitch but he's honest, and realistic, and you know he believes in his methods. Hope Sarsgaard gets some recognition for this work, cuz it's his best since Shattered Glass. I'll definitely be finishing this up soon.

While I definitely liked it, I felt like it could have been a whole lot more. What should have felt like Zero Dark 30, felt more like 13 Hours (not to begrudge that film, because I did like it for what it was)... Either way, I really dug the ensemble and I definitely have an overall positive feel about it.
... I just wanted/expected more.
