I’ve somehow missed a lot of his filmography. About to do some catching up! He’s traversed (successfully) many genres and I usually like to bring up about Hawks how he directs dialogue. And you know what Altman said, regarding overlapping dialogue….: “People say oh you started that, I didn’t start that. Howard Hawks started that.”
My current favorites....
Rio Bravo (my riiifle my ponyy 'n mee) Twentieth Century The Big Sleep
Your favs? Underrateds? Thoughts?

I still don't understand what happens in the plot of The Big Sleep, and I've seen it a billion times, lol. I don't even care because it just looks great and the dialog is great but honestly it gives me a headache.....
I love Bringing Up Baby though - though I think over the years its gone a revision in thinking and that it's considered overrated or stupid.......I find it an all-time screwball comedy and I just said I didn't get The Big Sleep so I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed anyway.....

Still have quite a lot to see from him, but even when I didn't love his films, I loved the approach he took to directing each of them. Such an underrated director in terms of just how versatile he could be, but he really excels best in comedy (and with Cary Grant in his films). My top five:
01. His Girl Friday. 02. Scarface (1932). 03. Only Angels Have Wings. 04. The Big Sleep. 05. Twentieth Century.
And while Bringing Up Baby was one of my least favorite films of the 1930s, I truly admire his direction (it was mostly the script that I didn't like). He brought so much energy to it, as did Grant and Hepburn, that it's such a shame I didn't like it more. Thankfully, he brought that same energy to His Girl Friday which has an infinitely better script, in my opinion, and is one of my favorite films of the 1940s.
