MESS! After 25 minutes I was only watching to catch references to Moon. The only things i liked were: entertaining performance from Rudd, cinematography and Mansell's score which was far from his best. The protagonist was dull and so was his quest to find his lover, the plot with the surgeons didn't mix well with the rest of the movie at all. The pedophilia subplot was so clumsily handled it was absolutely disgusting to behold and I have no idea why that was even in this movie. Why was it even set in this futuristic world? That brought nothing to the story.
That 10 second long cameo from Rockwell 1. featured better acting from him as multiple Sam Bells than whatever the hell Skarsgard was doing 2. made me wish they made that into feature film which would have been faaaaaar better than Mute.

I thought it was OK. I liked the futuristic setting but, at times, it looked like poor effects.

What. In the. Fuck, Duncan? Honestly I find him saying how he found "right themes" for this after the birth of his kid, considering what those themes were, to be really disturbing And the film is trash. What a waste of all that talent.

What a disappointment. I loved "Moon", I really liked "Source Code" and I even did not think "Warcraft" was awful, so yes you could say I considered Duncan Jones for a long time as one of the most interesting and inspired directors of his generation. Now he comes up with his first flop, which is sad, because the film was very promising. Its a neo-noir film and Jones definitely orientated himself at things like "Blade Runner" but was not really able to handle it properly. The acting was either stiff (Alexander Skarsgard) or absolutely unnecessarily and painfully over the top (Paul Rudd). The only one who was good was Justin Theroux, in an almost unrecognizable role.I liked the score by Clint Mansell and the reference to "Moon" was kind of cool. Also the look in general was good. Very atmospheric at times, but at other times it had a cheapish touch. I really think the biggest problem of the film was that neither characters nor story were really developed much. It ended up being very boring and uninteresting and only some visual aspects made it interesting to follow. Please Mr. Jones, take more thoughts into your next project again. Funny, I actually thought Skarsgard was reeeeeally good and belonged in an entirely different movie because he was too good for the rest of the movie. Rudd was good, but is severely hindered by the writing and direction of his character. Theroux, though, was just bad in my opinion. Again, another product of the poor writing and direction from Jones, but at least Rudd seemed to be giving a shit; Theroux was just kind of coasting, in my opinion. Either way, I blame the writing all the way. They felt like two different films and I would've vastly preferred just following Skarsgard's character the whole time rather than Rudd/Theroux's weird subplots. Shame when passion projects go south. I just don't even know what went wrong here. Keep hoping for Jones to go back to his Moon/Source Code days, but they seem like they're long gone.

I don't get the hate for this at all. I'm not claiming it turned the wheel of film-making or anything, but it was 6/10 decent for me and I was entertained for two hours. I'll fully call it on some weak ass dialogue and at times ropey acting, but it was a decent enough movie and always visually appealing at a minimum.

Oh my god that was disappointing. I didn’t hate it as much as a lot of people did and maybe that’s because I saw it with low expectations two months later instead of seeing it with high expectations when it first came out.
I’m a huge fan of Moon. Rockwell is my win for Best Actor. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time. I saw Duncan Jones in person at the Seattle international film festival when the film premiered there and it was a pretty amazing experience. He seems like a super passionate guy. Needless to say, I’ve been waiting for this film for years and I was so excited to see the Moon universe be expanded.
It’s not like it’s all bad. I think there are scenes that work individually but the pieces just don’t fit. Paul Rudd was the MVP and Theroux was solid but Skarsgård was just boring here. He’s got no personality with his only traits being Amish and mute. The whole film just felt like missed opportunities. There could’ve been an interesting exploration of this Amish guy struggling with technology but he picks up everything pretty easily. There’s an infamous scene that should’ve affected Duck and Bill’s relationship and changed their dynamic but instead we get one of the weirdest tonal shifts in film history. It’s messy. We think there’s going to be an epic fight with the burly bodyguard but the film ignores it. And too often, it felt intent on being weird and shocking instead of doing any interesting world-building. Like what the hell was that BS with the sex robots? The film feels like a first draft that could’ve been a great story if there were some revisions. As it is, it’s a jumbled mess. Honestly one of the biggest disappointments in years.

^^^ Good review AKenjiB . It was such a shame indeed because I am a HUGE fan of Moon (and to a lesser extent Source Code) . I still think Duncan has that "it" factor but he really botched Mute imo. The whole "extended universe " of Moon was laughable in Mute . Rockwell was barely featured . Here's hoping his next project is good though . I am not ready to give up on Jones despite his last 2 blunders (Mute & Warcraft)

This movie must be a bachelor, because it has commitment issues.
I wanted to do something more in depth, or make a gag with more than a second’s thought of condescension, but this flaming train wreck doesn’t deserve the benefit of anything clever or meaningful. It’s like Duncan Jones’ answer to Chappie.

Finally made myself watch this after putting it off for months. It's definitely a disappointing mess, but I didn't think it was awful. I think the biggest problem is that the film doesn't really do anything interesting with its futuristic setting... everything is window dressing in service of a bland detective plot mashed together with this random side story and it doesn't really cohere. Until the end, it just feels like the film is spinning its wheels, making it a bit of a slog. Overall, it's kind of a mishmash of half formed ideas. Good performance from Rudd though.
