Does anyone else feel like The Return was exponentially better than every other movie released in 2017? I’d have it ranked at #2 among 2017 releases I’ve seen. what's #1?

I feel like The Return was exponentially better than 99% of the movies released ever. I'd agree with that. Is it your favourite Lynch release? I'm starting to think it's the best thing he's made. Honestly, it might be. It's especially hard with Lynch because I basically love everything he's done. I mean, I have an enormous amount of love and admiration for Mulholland Drive - which is still one of, if not THE most structurally brilliant film I've ever seen - but the sheer power of The Return is just unbelievable. It might win out for me on that alone. Not sure too many people would agree here, but for me the entire Twin Peaks story (including the first two seasons, Fire Walk With Me, and The Return) is one of the best pieces of fiction ever. I really feel like it can stand up to some of the greatest art. I love it that much.

Mulholland Dr. is one of my very favourite films but The Return is starting to eclipse it when I think of my favourite Lynch. It's pretty easily one of the most staggering works of art of the 21st century imo.

I think that the time we are in, TV shows are better than movies. Twin Peaks: The Return is better than any movie from this whole decade in my opinion.

I enjoyed it while I was watching it. But ultimately The Return was a letdown for me.

I watched part 18 at around midnight tonight and have devoted the last couple of hours reading about the Twin Peaks world and reading quite literally every word in this thread; so sorry for all the random late-night/early-mornings likes, but I'm pissed that I didn't keep up and converse with you lovely folk.
Just finished this after watching the first 11 parts over the long New Years weekend and did one episode a night.
I absolutely adored this. I have to re-watch to tell you what scenes are from what parts because it's sorta jumbled, but the highlight eps are Ep. 3, 8, 11, 13, 17, 18 with 17 & 8 being the two best episodes ever.
Highlight moments are: Hellooooooo Ep. 8 Dougie, JaneyE sex scene Anything with Amanda Seyfried (criminally underused) Arm-wrestle scene Ep. 17 The final shot
Oh to be the one to pick David Lynch's mind; the fact that Showtime gave Lynch 18 hours of unadulterated vision is in short a miracle. Chris3 (typing on phone can't link) said it beautifully when talking about the rehashes and reboots that recycle the same formulas for the sake of a few bucks and this just spat on what everything we have come to know as truth about the artistic world that money>art.
I don't usually think in terms of what individual moments mean it's almost always just emotional reaction when consuming film. So I don't do theories and when talking about theories for this show irl, I'll just pick the one that makes the most sense to me that one you guys already posted tbh. So my point being I don't think intellectually ("no shit, your Harrelson take is garbage"), but as far as The Return goes and how I consume film was an absolute masterclass in film-making. Lynch subverts all expecatations of not only what I and I think we all expected in this particular series, but subverts all expectations and conventions into what film-making actually is; therefore, creating one of the most beautiful, funny, frightening, sad, dark, uplifting, humanistic pieces of art ever assembled.
Speaking of the 'humanistic' side of this and going away from the scope, but just getting to the everyday conversations, and occurrences in this season. I hope this is exactly how David Lynch thinks everyday normal people talk and behave. Dougie is clearly not himself how every person loves him even more so instead of sending him to a doctor because they might think he had a stroke. I hope David Lynch believes that gangs truly determine who the leader is based on an arm-wrestling bout. Gotta love the Lynchian way
The TwinPeaksiverse is gladly replacing my daily dose of the The Office as the show I re-watch constantly. I think the more I watch this season in particular it may very well be my favorite cohesive work of art I'll ever experienced in any medium
Chris3, I like the way you write it's nice. I could read entire pages and threads of Moonman and Stephen talking about Lynch & Malick
Ah, I'm tired (clearly, I'm talking to myself through parentheses), I'll go to bed now, but I probably won't fall asleep. So I'll watch something devoid of subtext and requires absolutely zero thought. Marie Antoinette!

Glad you loved The Return too! It gets even better rewatching it. Looking back on this thread is great. Probably 60-65% of all my initial predictions and interpretations ended up being hilariously wrong. I thought I knew what to expect from directors subverting expectations at that point in my film watching life and I've never been so wrong But yeah, watching The Return as it aired was by far the most fun I've ever had with a TV show. I'll never forget how I felt after I saw that ending for the first time. Although I love all 18 episodes - even the couple I initially was disappointed by - I think my top five favorites would be something like this (in chronological order): Part 7 Part 8 Part 11 Part 17 Part 18

Random thought - Am I the only one that finds the ending of Part 18 legitimately terrifying? Not just unnerving or creepy... but straight-up scary. I can only say that about very few scenes in tv/movies (and several of them come from Lynch).

I wouldn't say terrifying. I do find it very, very sad though. Cooper desperately trying to figure out where he went wrong in his effort to "save" Laura (completely blind to the fact that it doesn't work that way), the way we see the memories suddenly flash across Carrie's face, her final scream, it's honestly heartbreaking.

I completely agree with all that, but something about the way the scene plays out, and the way the lights go off... it just gives me chills.

For me the scariest moment of the season was the Woodsman's killing spree and poem at the end of Part 8. I found that very viscerally disturbing and was pretty shaken up after watching it for the first time.

This is probably a dumb question, but is The Return eligible for the ICCs this year? It did technically play in a theater (the MoMA).

So I have re-watched The Return in it's entirety on Blu-Ray.
When it ended it's run on TV, I went so far as to say that it was my new #1 season of TV and a re-watch has done nothing but confirm this.
A masterpiece, and I don't play it fast and loose with that word.

Reminder that we're all blessed to have been alive to see The Return.
This might've been done before, but 10 favorite moments from the new season? I'd go with:
1. Cooper going back to save Laura in the black and white sequence, which ends with her disappearing with a terrified scream. 2. What year is this? 3. Red dropping by the RR diner and the ensuing chaos outside that culminates in the hysterical fat woman's "very sick" kid sitting up. 4. Shelly commenting on James across the room while Red gestures towards her and The Chromatics play. 5. The Woodsman's killing spree and following incantation. 6. The two random girls at the Roadhouse talking about the incident with Billy. 7. Ben and Beverly investigating the source of the humming noise in the Great Northern. 8. Richard Horne's introduction. 9. The doppelganger's talk with Phillip Jeffries. 10. Hawk visits Sarah. "It's a goddamn bad story, isn't it?"
There are so many more great scenes but these are the ones that stand out for me.

This day last year we all watched a guy sweep up peanut shells for two minutes.
Brilliant! I have absolutely no idea what's going on...

Obviously this doesn't mean that he's going to do more "Twin Peaks", but if he and Frost ever get to it, I'll be there in a second. Although a huge part of me hopes that the ending of "The Return" is THE ending of "Twin Peaks". That shit is still haunting me, it's one of those endings that you'll never be able to shake off.

I feel like it ended in such a cool, jaw dropping and heartbreaking way, that I don't want anymore. Still, if they make it, I will watch.
