I liked it. Its not a perfect film but surely not as bad as many people make it out to be. And i judge the art of the artist and not the artist himself. Its a strong drama which just like Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" centers around a woman who is trapped in an unhappy life and on the verge of a breakdown. Kate Winslet plays that woman wonderfully and gives one of her strongest performances in ages. Her voice, her expressions, everything was top notch and what the character needed. A very interesting turn. Jim Belushi also gives a very strong performance with many different facettes, its hard not to like him even though he is unlikeable in many ways. For Belushi it is new theretory as he is rather used to funny roles, while this one was rather a serious attempt. Juno Temple was fine but did not do anything outstanding. Justin Timberlake is the weak link of the film. Totally miscast. I really did not buy his performance at all. Him and the ending, which left too many open questions and strings, were the weaker parts of the film. Also some of the lighting was a bit off or even over the top. It surely is not Woody Allen's strongest film but one of his better of the decade. The whole look and feel of Corny Island of the 50s was pitch perfect as well.
Nominations for:
Best Costume Design
Rating: 8/10

I would agree with all that - I didn't like it as much but thought it's way underrated and Winslet is flat out great in this role. To me some of the dialog was rather off - Woody probably could have tightened up several dialog passages here.
Timberlake is definitely the weak link and some of the directorial control and pace is off. But 31% of Rotten Tomatoes? No fncking way, I'd watch it again right now over The Post that's for sure. People should be ashamed of the short shrift they've given it.
In addition to Winslet, Storaro's cinematography is spectacularly appropriate - burnishing the frame with much that looks like fire (tying in with the fire subplot) and cool images that appear icy at some key times too that tie in to Winslet.
People who are big Woody fans are going to find much to like in this film - flaws and all.

I understand the hesitation against Allen at the moment but, if you just look at the product it is one of his strongest in ages.

Its such a shame that Winslet is going to lose a nomination because of Allen. Ugh.

To me, the reviews haven't been good because of hypocrisy and unfairness towards the film - it's not like it got a fair shake - and it isn't just a shame for Winslet it's a shame for Allen most of all..........but the film will last longer than the small mindedness towards his film anyway.

Winslet was well praised with those reviews. It would be such a well deserved nomination on her impeccable carreer. If they nominate Streep for anything....

At least , Meryl's movies have been receiving good reviews.

Because 90% of the Streep nods were singular, her movies had no extra nods. She won her third Oscar with 'The Iron Lady'....

And I didn't care for Streep's performance in THE IRON LADY either but not only her + the movie itself have been more praised than Winslet + WONDER WHEEL.

Sometimes they don't nominate actors because they think they have no chance on winning, but its also nice to reward them with nominations.

Finally watched it... Winslet was great, the cinematography was great... but nothing else was great (or even good).
Timberlake was massively miscast but the movie still would have been meh with a more appropriate actor in the role.
