He's been around for so long it's kind of weird how he hasn't had his big break yet. My favorite performance of his is probably in the Jack Kerouac adaptation On the Road.
Recently he's been in Unbroken, Inside Llewyn Davis and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Now he's in Mudbound and next year he's set to star in another potential Oscar contender "Burden" with Forest Whitaker.

Hopefully, he's really talented. If Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk had actually lived up to its potential, he probably would have been nominated.

In general the hardest one to get is the first.
He's only in his early 30s and he's done some good stuff, but say a few years back, I am not sure a lot of people would have said Oscar Isaac wouldn't have a nod by now......many years of terrific work didn't mean much to Sam Rockwell before this year.....

Sure, with the right project, why not?

Big Hedlund fan here. Become a fan after TRON & On the Road. I do think he will eventually get nominated one day . He's just had some bad luck over the past couple of years . I don't blame him for turning down a bunch of roles to work with Ang Lee & Joe Wright. On paper, those films looked GREAT but it just didn't turn out that way .
He has the HBO mini series coming up later this month called Mosaic (directed by Soderbergh ) and like you mentioned, a very baity role in Burden (about the KKK) so I think he'll continue to be alright. Could definitely get nominated for Burden since he's the main character .

Also, IF Matt Reeves is looking to start from scratch with his Batman films, I gotta say Hedlund would make a great Batman/Bruce Wayne. He has the height, dark/brooding good looks and a deep voice . I'd be all for it!

This board has such a hard-on for the guy and I think he's good... but he really hasn't shown me much more than just being solid.

I'm sure he will, because they're still trying to make him a thing. Like Fish, I think he can be good but the love affair with him is kinda baffling. Inside Llewyn Davis is the only time I've watched him and thought, "Yeah, I wanna see more of that dude."

He's solid but I don't think he's particularly great or under appreciated at all. That being said, pretty much any actor can become an Oscar contender given the right role and narrative. Hell, if Laurie Metcalf can become an Oscar front runner, why couldn't he?

Absolutely. It's not a question of talent, it's just about waiting for the stars to align. I remember ppl asking this same question about Allison Janney before anyone knew about her role in I Tonya. Hedlund will have his day too.
