Very good, yet a bit overlong film about three veterans reuniting and finding resolutions for old and new wounds. Richard Linklater's adaptation was good, moving and offered potential for great performances, and it delivered, however 30 minutes less and some cutting could have served it well. PErformance wise it as excellent. Bryan Cranston was simply brilliant in his Jack Nicholson-mode. What a force of nature performance. One of the greatest works of the year for this versatile actor and I am shocked that he did not get any kind of serious attention. Steve Carell was very good in a very calm role. I preferred him in "Battle of the Sexes" slightly but still he once again proved how good he is when he is serious. Laurence Fishburne had his moments but was by far the weakest of the trio. Was not too impressed by him in general. Decent soundtrack and some really good dialogues and monologues.
Nomintations for:
Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Bryan Cranston* Best Adapted Screenplay
Rating: 8/10

I thought it was pretty solid but Cranston is way out of his depth. Pretty embarrassing performance honestly.

Yeah that's surprising to me. I think he goes way, way over-the-top and is chewing the scenery basically in every scene. I actually thought the film would have been better without him. I think Carell's muted performance was the best but that the sorrow he managed to give to the film was repeatedly lessened by Cranston's theatrics.

Watched this today and really liked it. All three leads were great and complimented each other. While Cranston was the scene stealer I felt Carell deserves a lot of praise for his layered restrained performance that was so full of emotion.

As a huge fan of Linklater's last few films, I thought this was a disappointment. Owen Gleiberman's review pretty much hits the nail on the head by calling it didactic and plodding with characters who speak in cliches and world-weary platitudes and who don't even seem believable as war veterans.

Honestly, one of the few films last year I really liked.

I actually quite enjoyed it, but I wish it was a true sequel to The Last Detail. At the very least for the use of the name Billy L. "Badass" Buddusky, Sal Nealon is a severe downgrade as names go.
