It's a good film, Norton is great (he's always fantastic with monologues), and Beverly D'Angelo (random: she has one of my favorite full names), and Stacey Keach provide good supporting performances. That said, a lot of it is really pushing the limits of repulsive racist themes and attitudes making it feel disgusting to watch and listen to at times, but it's not like they could have really circumvented that without sacrificing the integrity of what the whole point of the movie is. 7/10.

didn't know it was so loved. eh it's alright though, liked it more when i was younger. too preachy at times and parts of it feel gimmicky, though the ending is quite good.

It's rancid garbage. I don't really use this term because it is such a lazy criticism, but it's fully applicable in regards to the director of American History X and Detachment: Tony Kaye is a hack. Norton's "intensity" is nothing but phony posturing, Edward Furlong is awful, and Beverly D'Angelo is wholly unconvincing. Only Stacy Keach seems to be somewhat in the ballpark of believable menace, but even he can't salvage this preachy, overwrought mess.

I'm not too in love with it, though I'd be more inclined to side with catrician than Stephen in terms of my 'dislike'.

I think it's a crap. Norton is wonderful but that's about it. It's overcranked to such a ridiculous extent that it feels like a comedy from time to time. That is when it doesn't feel like a sermon about the most obvious things delivered in the most obvious ways imaginable.

I'm a fan. Not one of my favourites, but Norton's performance and the subject matter are what I find so fascinating about the film.

There's a few areas of AHX I'm not that keen on - some parts of the script weren't done too well, there's too many close-ups and a little too much slow-motion (but there were some great uses of it), but I still like it a good deal. With the exception of one moment at the end, Norton gives an astounding performance; indeed the rest of cast was really good.

Incredible film. Here is my write-up I have on my top 100:
"Driven by one of the most fascinating character arcs within its time, American History X explores hatred and redemption. Where other films would sugarcoat, this film brings to the surface the reasons behind racism and bigotry, bringing up legitamate points going as far to allow audiences to understand and empathize with, before intelligently responding to its evil. The film presents two sides of an argument, as good writing often should."

It's solid. The direction is overly exploitative, the script has some preachy moments (though, in all honesty, preachiness regarding this sort of pervasive and obvious issue) that don't hit, and I think the film could have done more to chart Derek's progress to how he ultimately renounces his past self. However, Norton is absolutely terrific, the film is dealing with some powerful thematic material, it really goes all-in on showing just how dangerous and all-encompassing the neo-Nazi mindset is (little things like "The White Man Marches On" song may seem over the top, but that shit is real), and it does a good job of covering how these sick ideologies live on through generations.
