I think this will be Nolan's year for at least his first director nomination.

Chalamet is going leading and hes still young at 20ish years old which is a tough sell for the Academy Hammer is someone the industry has been trying to make happen for a long time now I agree that his age is a pretty significant strike against him (for some reason the Academy just can't be bothered with men under ~27, lead or supporting), but if early reviews are anything to go by, I can't see Hammer getting in without the film's lead following suit. SPC is an incredible campaigner and Hammer is somebody the industry has been trying to make happen for almost 7 years now-- he's basically a co-lead Also, Stuhlbarg could easily sweep the critic awards and find himself in the race over both

Cause why not right? Post some early contenders and predict what nominations they'll get or which Actor/Actress might get nominated. I think Call Me By Your Name might be a BP contender but I think it'll have to do really well with critics awards like Moonlight and Fury Road which I can see it doing. Right now I think it'll get 2 noms: Adapted Screenplay Supporting Actor - Hammer or Stuhlbarg Oh I would love that. It deserve all awards in the world but yes nominations for Hammer and Adapted Screenplay are the most likely ones. I hope Timotheé will get in he was so good its unbelievable.

I'm hoping it's Chastain's year with either Woman Walks Ahead or Molly's Game.

I read Molly's Game script, and it provides Chastain with another icy, powerhouse role (albeit one we've seen her play countless times) It's a very typical Sorkin character and I'm sure she'll be in contention for the nom
I'm still uncertain about a win since the script is a bit more commercial and doesnt have a huge emotional swing (there's a demanding father daughter subplot but it's not executed in an openly emotional way) STX is still unproven and it might be hard to compare against someone like Dench in a Frears film for Focus

Trying to predict where the contenders will premiere:
A lot of late entries that either will be pushed or wont do festival circuit: -PTA: Focus aims to get it out this year but filming just started so it will probably skip the circuit ala Revenant or Silence- NO FEST -Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara: with April production, this will need a miraculous production to get out this year- NO FEST OR PUSHED TO 2018 -First Man: Chazelle, Universal, Gosling are fast-tracking for March or April shoot, but thats a tight deadline- AFI OR NO FEST -Dick Cheney: Paramount is packed and Plan B wants it out but no cast yet- AFI OR NO FEST -Inner City: Sony is aiming to start in March but will likely hold it off a la Hustle- NO FEST
OTHER CONTENDERS: -Untitled Bigelow (Annapurna, Aug): with an August release, this can only do Cannes -Annihilation (Paramount)- CANNES or VENICE -Battle of the Sexes (Searchlight)- no release date yet and could end up as a summer release still -Blade Runner (WB, Oct)- CANNES or VENICE (TIFF and Telluride, too, obviously) -Brad's Status (Amazon)- TELLURIDE or TIFF -Can You Ever Forgive Me (Searchlight)- TELLURIDE or TIFF if 2017 -Current War (Weinstein)- TIFF -Darkest Hour (Focus, Nov)- TIFF -Downsizing (Paramount, December)- TELLURIDE (Cannes is possible, but I think Payne will hold off until the fall fests) -Dunkirk (WB, July)- NO FEST (but Cannes is possible if WB wants to position this as something more serious than commercial) -Film Stars Dont Die in Liverpool- TIFF -Glass Castle (Lionsgate)- TELLURIDE or TIFF -Greatest Showman (Fox, Christmas)- NO FEST -Happy End (SPC)- CANNES -Hostiles- VENICE -How To Talk To Girls At Parties (A24)- CANNES -I, Tonya (Miramax)- TIFF -Killing of a Sacred Deer (A24)- CANNES or Venice -Lady Bird- TELLURIDE -Last Flay Flying (Amazon)- TELLURIDE or TIFF (Cannes, if ready, is possible given how much Amazon showed last year, or Venice) -Lean on Pete (A24)- TELLURIDE or TIFF (Cannes or Venice might be more likely given the nature but A24 have positioned their #1s at Telluride and TIFF thus far) -Leisure Seeker (SPC)- TIFF -Logan Lucky (Bleecker Street, Aug)- CANNES -Marshall (Open Road, Oct)- TIFF -Mary Magdalene (Weinstein)- VENICE (Cannes probably wont be ready, or it could just directly go to TIFF) -The Mercy- TIFF (maybe Venice but movie feels DOA) -Molly's Game (STX)- TELLURDE or TIFF (still filming) -Mother (Paramount, Oct)-VENICE -Murder on Orient Express (Fox, Nov)- NO FEST -Okja (Netflix)- CANNES -Red Sparrow (Fox, Nov)- NO FEST -Shape of Water (Searchlight)- VENICE (maybe Cannes if ready) -Soldado- TIFF -The Snowman (Universal, Oct)- TIFF (maybe Venice) -Star Wars (Disney, Disney)- lol -Stronger (Lionsgate)- TIFF -Suburbicon (Paramount)- VENICE -Untitled AA Milne (Searchlight)- TIFF -Wonder Wheel (Amazon)- CANNES or NO FEST -Victoria and Abdul (Focus, Sept)- NO FEST -Wonderstruck (Amazon)- Haynes usually plays CANNES but they can hold off until Venice, Telluride, TIFF if they have serious BP aspirations -Untitled Baumbach- TIFF -You Were Never Really Here (Amazon)- CANNES -Zookeeper's Wife (Focus)- lol
I still see Wonderstruck as the early frontrunner as of now for few reasons: -crowdpleasing source material (Hugo has 83 on MC) and artistic appeal -technically ambitious -should have actor support-- possible nom for Moore, sprawling ensemble of child actors -fest breakout -should be Haynes most accessible film by a mile, and Academy has been rewarding indie directors or more auteur driven films as of late -should have critical acclaim unlike other fest players like Darkest Hour -should have a prime release date -could be seen as repetitive after La La Land but that is seen more about jazz and artists while this is about silent film Hollywood, actors, and children -consensus choice
-I'm not sure how well Darkest Hour will be received critically (script is fine, I dont see higher than 80s tbh) outside of Oldman and true Oscar bait hasnt won since King's Speech (which was a critical smash and box office hit), not to mention possible Churchill fatigue with The Crown, and Wright's iffy track record -Bigelow's film is early release and could be politically polarizing -Spielberg's will be too late if at all this year and wont have fest momentum -PTA's film will be late, Focus is packed, will film about dressmaker with sexual content truly contend -Untitled AA Milne looks like pedestrian Oscar bait and Searchlight has been looking for bigger players -I'm not sure how well greatest Showman will be received, and I dont think another musical will win right after
Other possible major BP contenders I''m toying with: Downsizing- should do fests and Payne is beloved but will a satirical sci-fi be a consensus choice, due to have his Academy streak end eventually, could be more admired than loved Dunkirk- will need to be Nolan's most critically successful film to compensate for summer release and possible lack of fest support, possibly no acting noms Lean on Pete- A24 is working magic right now and could be a critical favorite, but will it be emotional and crowdpleasing enough Last Flag Flying- Linklater is on a streak, fest breakout but "sequel" to a profane Ashby classic, Amazon is packed

I just want Harris to have something to do in Aronofsky's new film. It's gonna be 15 years since his last nomination.

I remember one of my many terrible predictions was that The Way Back was going to be a big Oscar hit that way Peter Weir and Ed Harris would both finally win Oscars. I mean it seemed too perfect. Harris to me is overdue, and he seems like the perfect kind of older veteran to win in Supporting, and Weir had just directed Master and Commander prior to The Way Back albeit more than five years earlier.

Nice predictions. It'd be really awesome to see Donald Sutherland finally get nominated. And I'm still a bit bitter over Idris Elba not getting nominated for Beasts of No Nation.

Imho he should have been nominated for this and Gone Baby Gone not to mention several times before 2003...4 nominations is a good amount but then I think someone like Adams has 5 and just
