The Chronicles of Narnia meets Princess Tutu? As much as I like both of those, this looks like too much of a ripoff of the former without the horrifying darkness of the latter to temper it. And the director doesn't exactly give me high hopes.

I didn’t enjoy that. It feels too Alice in Wonderland to me.

He's a crappy gun for hire now, but he used to make some decent movies, like The Cider House Rules and What's Eating Gilbert Grape -- the latter a legitimately great film. He got caught up in making Weinsteiny Oscar bait. According to Letterboxd, I've seen 6 of his movies, yet they're all so forgettable that I could only recall four of them. No, five, I've seen An Unfinished Life. I swear I don't know what the 6th is. Oh, The Hoax. Yeah, I kind of remember that exists now. Yup.

The sets look pretty, the costumes do too. But that shot of Mirren with the mice is like something straight out of "Alice in Wonderland" which is not good.

getting Alice in Wonderland PTSD from that trailer, but the costumes look nice. Doubt I'll watch it.
Also, not a great idea reminding us that it's from the studio that brought us the shitty Beauty and the Beast and Jungle Book rehashes. Disney really is just about mass-producing crappy remakes these days. It's reverse-recycling: taking good products and turning them into waste. Digesting classics and shitting them out for the masses to consume.

He's been "Gareth Edwards'd".

I really dug Captain America and October Sky. Hidalgo is messy, but not bad for what it is. Can't think of what else he's done, but I actually pretty well like him, near as I can gather.

Johnston is very underrated. He's a solid "blockbuster" director.

Not exactly great news, but I don't mind the replacement either.

Interesting to note that Johnston's career was going downhill big time with 'The Wolfman' being the bottom of this career and managed to make a comeback with 'Captain America: The First Avenger'.

It was less that his career was going downhill and more that he just happen to find a more potentially good project. The Wolfman was a nightmare of a production.

I actually liked this trailer. It's looking way WAY too expositioney, but the aesthetic is mostly good. Mostly. We really need to stop using CGI to create palaces and streets, even in a fantasy setting. It doesn't evoke wonder, folks.
That said, my original comment stands: Princess Tutu meets The Chronicles of Narnia. And while it seems to embrace some of the darker aesthetic of Princess Tutu, I doubt that it can come together thematically the way that PT did. I can read the whole movie from here; Mummy created fantasy land, but it got all mean and twisted and not happy and idyllic anymore, and it is up to plucky girl to use her imagination to save the day. A far cry from the children making tough decisions to save the world in The Chronicles of Narnia, or the characters of PT slowly changing allegiances as they learn more of their enemies and allies.
I hope that I'm wrong. This could be good. Disney did release Pete's Dragon, so they're not entirely creatively bankrupt. I'm hoping for the best.

I'll go see this just because I'm a big fan of the ballet from seeing it so many times at Christmastime as a child. I wish they weren't doing a "dark and edgy" spin on it, though. I don't know that there's ever been a straightforward live action narrative adaptation of the ballet before. I know there's no way they won't use some of the original music, but I don't know why they feel the need to do contemporary songs with lyrics when you already have a score by frickin' Tchaikovsky (I know "the academy" likes to turn their noses up at him these days, but I like romantic excess). Misty Copeland is so hot. Very glad she's in this.
