One of my favorites. Also OBJECTIVELY superior to Forrest Gump.

The short novel is the 3rd great book in a row by Jerzy Kosinski (after The Painted Bird and Steps), a fave writer of mine and his screenplay was meticulous (and weirdly not nodded, he faced plagiarism whispers even then though, which of course wasn't the point with a guy like Kosinski, but that's a different story). The film is quite good and strikes just the right delicate note and tone but more than anything gave Sellers a role as great and weird as he was.
He should have won imo.

Actually I think the 1979 line-up is one of the few that match mine exactly - as long as you are just looking at English language, I think those top 5 really are the tops of 79 (I'd rank them Sellers/Scheider/Lemmon/Hoffman/Pacino. The year is deeper and quirkier than that though - Sheen, Dourif, I'd put Woody Allen very close to the top 5 for his very best screen performance in Manhattan, Burt Reynolds even in Starting Over has his fans, James Woods in The Onion Field if you consider him lead etc.
If you go foreign that year it gets tougher, I mean Kinski in two films was amazing, and Patrick Dewaere for Serie Noire which is an all-time favorite performance if mine - like it can stand with any performance I've ever seen level.

Quite good in Chilly Scenes of Winter - and it's a terrifically sad and sadly funny role, every guy recognized themselves in that part a little - and Cutter's Way he's aces too. Guy couldn't get a break really - by the time he pops up in After Hours just a few years later it already looks like he missed his moment

Very funny satire with a very good performance from Sellers. A 9/10 for me.

Like it a lot. A nice, subtle satire with a deeply affecting performance from Sellers.
