Tonight is the WGA awards.
Since 2000, the WGA Original Screenplay winner has gone onto the Oscar 11/16 times. The exceptions were 2000 ("You Can Count on Me" beat out "Almost Famous"), 2002 ("Bowling for Columbine" wasn't nominated), 2010 ("Inception" won, but TKS wasn't eligible), 2012 (ZD30 won, but "Django" wasn't eligible), and 2014 (TGBH won, but "Birdman" wasn't eligible).
For Adapted Screenplay, the WGA and Oscar have missed only 4 times since 2000. You had "The Hours" ("The Pianist" wasn't eligible), "American Splendor" ("Return of the King" won), "Up in the Air" ("Precious" won), and "Captain Phillips" ("12 Years" wasn't eligible).
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
1. ARRIVAL - Won the Critics Choice and 7 critics circle awards.
2. HIDDEN FIGURES - Won the SAG Ensemble.
3. FENCES - Best Picture nominee
4. NOCTURNAL ANIMALS - Won a couple of screenplay critics circle awards.
5. DEADPOOL - Moving on.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
1. MANCHESTER BY THE SEA - Won 15 critics circle awards, the BAFTA, and tied with LLL at the Critics Choice awards.
2. LA LA LAND - Won the Globe and Critics Choice, and took home 3 critics circle awards.
3. MOONLIGHT - Won the Satellite award for Best Original Screenplay and 9 critics circle awards.
4. HELL OR HIGH WATER - Won 11 critics circle awards.
5. LOVING - Moving on.
I am going to go with "Arrival" and "Manchester" here. However, HF and LLL winning here is very much within grasp.
A "Moonlight" victory here might increase its chances of winning best picture.
Who wins the WGA today?
