Right now Samantha Morton, she is incredible in that soapy historical show called The Serpent Queen.-
She was great when she was young, and she is great now in leading or supporting roles, as heroine or villian, in films or TV.-
I want to see her in a slapstick commedy.-

Blanchett and I'll take the peerless Adèle Haenel too (under 30 still!) Michelle Williams is a good one too not mentioned ^ Well this asshat totally had this nailed - heck Williams hadn't even given her best performance yet (Fosse / Verdon) Haenel is obviously great though theoretically is retired but not if it's a pro-female role, matches her politics or involves literally castrating toxic males In my review of Tar I said that the 2 best working actress may be in that film - Nina Hoss is a Great actress capital G Missing from almost everybody's list Léa Seydoux is pretty terrific these days....... Jodie Comer belongs on this list just for her Prima Facie performance tbh........ Virginie Efira is another one we should have on our radar......and she might be the best comic actor overall tbh......she's pretty awesome.....

How the fuck is this even a competition . Olivia Colman is 48 years old. She's already pretty much the second coming of Judi Dench. It's her. World class stage and screen actor. No one mentioned has her combination of stage and screencraft, gravitas and range. Over 50, I think there are quite a few people I would put over Colman, but I think she has too much over the under 50 set.

A few all-timer performances in film ( The Favourite, Tyrannosaur) and television ( Broadchurch) under her belt, plus she's one of the most versatile actresses alive and has conquered comedy and drama thoroughly. And she's only getting started; Empire of Light might not be getting the best reviews as a film but her singular notices are stellar and we really can't count her out for an Oscar nomination this year even in this stacked field. TL;DR: It's Olivia's world and we're all living in it.

Colman is the Kathy Bates of her era. A good/great actress, but with only limited range roles due to physical appearance. Besides, she looks way older than her age.

She looks like she's in her forties. She's 6 years younger than me, and she looks like my aunt. And I never wear makeup nor I had surgery. Nor my aunt.

Kathy Bates hardly had any lead roles outside of Misery and Dolores Clairbone. Colman is constantly cast in lead parts on film & TV. The Favorite, Broadchurch, The Crown, The Lost Daughter, Empire Of The Light .Colman is more Judi Dench or Maggie Smith than Bates. Not conventional beauties, but still allowed to lead projects more than a character actress like Bates. Colman's range of roles available to her is far more expansive than Bates. Especially since she can do film/TV leads in the UK as well as America

This thread is about greatest young actress (let me, an old lady, call people under 50 "young").

She won the Best Actress Oscar for The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie when she was 34 years old. Even so, the comparison to Colman with Dench isn't to do with what ages their stardom took off. Everyone knows Dench only became a big international star comparatively late in life. The comparison is to to with stature. Colman's stature is such that she can be considered Dench's heir to the throne of the most esteemed British actress across all mediums.

I'm not dismissing Colman 's talent, nor Smith 's or Dench 's. I'm just talking about Colman, Smith or Dench being (in their era) the greatest actress under 50. Oscars aren't a definitive meter, otherwise we should name girls who won more Oscars then them before turning 50. Barbara Streisand was never considered an attractive woman for instance, but she was more interesting than them before her 50s.
