Let me start off by saying I absolutely loved her in La La Land. It was far and away the most I've ever enjoyed a performance of hers. That being said, I don't think she even deserves a nomination. There were SO many better leading actress performances this year. It's really a shame she'll be recognized over any of those.

Here's the thing — I don't think that's atypical. Like, I don't think Brie Larson did something in Room that was better than at least 6-10 other actresses that year in that category, but I still had no problem with it because I still thought she was good.

I think that she is actually poised to be one of the better winners of the last fifteen years. This category generally lends itself to really great or really bad winners, with very little wiggle room. It's certainly better than the two performances bandied about as being "more deserving" of the year.

Eh, imho it's not like someone who was much much better than her is losing because she is winning. Ali and Shanonn is a case like that.

I mean, yeah, she's not at all the best of the year, but most of my favorite performances weren't even nominated so...

I disagree. It seems like we tend to discredit performances if they aren't overly dramatic. (Matt Damon in The Martian seems to suffer the same criticism). If you absolutely loved her in the movie, she obviously did something right. She was the whole package. She oozes charisma and it's one of the reasons why the film works so well.
I prefer Portman, but I have no problem with Stone winning. It's one of my favorite performances in a while.

It's easy to look at a performance like Stone's and dismiss it as too light (or the dreadful "she's just playing herself!!1!" nonsense that gets bandied about a lot), but not only does she nail every aspect of that performance, the charisma, likeability and screen presence that she displays are also paramount tools for any performer, and they shouldn't be taken for granted. It's not easy to hold a film like this together and make it work. Serious biopic Acting! isn't necessarily better than less showy, more relaxed fare. I really do like all three frontrunners, but between Stone and Portman, I'd go with the former.

It's an effervescent, buoyant performance that has no business attracting any type of major hardware in light of the competition. And at the ones saying she was better than either Portman or Huppert.

She's not my personal pick of the nominees, but she's great in her film, so I won't mind her win.

I don't have an issue with a lighter or a comedic performance being recognized. In fact, I feel they are unfairly overlooked. But for me personally when looking at the best lead actress performances of the year, she just is not in the top echelon.

Can somebody please explain to me what was so big a stretch for Stone to play this character that she deserves all those accolades? Because otherwise I'm inclined to say that she made it look easy because it WAS easy. It's the kind of role that shouldn't be a stretch for any halfway competent actress, a character most actresses probably can relate to very much from the beginning. She didn't even put much effort or training into her singing and dancing skills.
And I can't believe how people are shortselling Gosling. That film wouldn't have been nearly as good if Stone had carried it on her own. It was a team effort of two charming actors who played off very well against each other and made each other shine.

I disagree. I actually thought she was very good. Her performance not only felt "charming", but also very "really" as well. Portman and Huppert would be deserving winners of course, but I have no issue with Stone taking home the actual prize in the end, either.

Curious who else you think could have worked in the role...

Me when she wins and the audience erupts in applause and cheers:
In all serious she's fine in the movie and fills out the role well. Not going to be amongst the great Best Actress winners at all but very few recent victors have been. She won't be amongst the worst either. I haven't seen Negga yet but of the nominees I suppose i'd ranker her slightly above Streep, 3rd out of the 4.

I'm kind of dying to know your thoughts on her performance. Her best work to date, yes?

In a year that didn't have Negga being amazing and Portman giving the best lead actress performance of the decade I'd be happy enough with her winning, but those things happened so I'm not. Considering some of the... choices they've made in the category she's really on the better end of things, but it does suck that Portman was the assumed frontrunner until her movie did whatever the opposite of sticking the landing is and has been reduced to an also-ran.
