How is it that she's barely mentioned here, given her incredible contributions to world cinema? She's undoubtedly one of the all time greats. I recently watched her Volpi Cup-winning performance in 'The Story of Qiu Ju' - transfixing, fascinating work.
Beyond her legendary beauty, what are your thoughts on her as an actor? Your favorite of her performances?

She is a stone cold legend. The shining star of that glorious golden period for Chinese cinema from the late 80s through the 90s. My favourite from her is... I don't really know, I like her in everything I've seen except Hannibal Rising. Probably Ju Dou or To Live, showcasing her abilities at both ends of the spectrum.

I actually just watched Raise the Red Lantern for the first time yesterday and thought she was quite terrific in that. The character is so petty and unlikeable, but there's so much tragic weight to her performance that you can't help but be shattered by the end of it. I love her drunk scene, which is both funny and pathetic...

Undoubtedly a great actress, among the best of all time. My favorite performance from her is in Raise The Red Lantern, but she was fantastic in everything I've seen her in.
