I don't really know what Paramount could do with Mother - it's an anti-audience film, platform release or wide - the word gets out and that's that. If you love the film you can wear it as a badge of honor, but there was never any shot of it doing well with audiences at all.

I reckon most of the people who like mother! are the cinephile crowd and not part of the mass movie-going public. |

If you love the film you can wear it as a badge of honor, but there was never any shot of it doing well with audiences at all. Yeah, that's a good point. I haven't seen it yet, but it seems to be all over the place and challenging in a way few wide releases are these days, so an underwhelming performance was to be expected anyway. Probably not the smartest idea to have it open the week after It  , but still. That's too bad, though, because even if I wind up hating mother!, Paramount will see this as yet another message that they shouldn't invest in adult-oriented original fare and should just throw their money into whatever Hasbro property have left to milk instead. |
