Just a casual reminder that the best show of all-time is ending tomorrow. Everyone who's still sleeping on this masterpiece: now's your fucking chance! Oh shit, I needed that reminder. Now I'm emotional.

Every time I think the show can't top itself, it does something like "The View From Halfway Down."

Their very last penultimate episode is one of the most breathtaking things I've ever seen, television or otherwise. The finale was astonishingly beautiful.
May post more thoughts later.

Well, it looks like I got some catching up to do as I've only seen up to half of season 5, and I know I'm already going to miss thing show! Every season is practically a roller-coaster with this show.
Took bad its somewhat successor Tuca and Bertie never got a chance to shine tho right after this show ends.

So, to write down more of my thoughts on the ending of this silly, animated show about talking animals that has meant so much to me over the last three years since I started watching it:
The more I've been letting this final stretch of episodes ruminate, the more I think it's masterful. I continue to be blown away by this show's authenticity and sincerity mixed with absurdism and fantasy, and that reached its peak with an ending that somehow managed to be fan service-y and neat in a traditional sitcom way while also staying true to its lifelikeness and giving us the sense that life continues to go on for these characters and that their struggles are far from over after the show drops its curtain. Indeed, most of the major characters get their classical sitcom conclusions, where it seems like every thread of their life gets wrapped up and they all settle in a place that feels perfect for that character. All the while, BoJack's arc has never been darker (which is saying a hell of a lot), and has never demanded more from the character and from the audience. BoJack's haunted past and all of his toxic behavior have slowly been catching up to him, and here that narrative through-line reaches its climax. There are so many scenes in this final stretch that are just difficult to watch because of the truly shocking things that our main character is confronted with about his own actions, and it's nothing short of hauntingly powerful and uncomfortable as much as it is necessary. I can't think of another television show that went as far as this one did to hold its antihero protagonist accountable for his evil deeds, all without going to a place of outright vilifying him and still always shading the character with a million degrees of nuance. At the same time, there's no fantasy about achieving justice, and the consequences that BoJack has to deal with feel realistic even more so than they feel appropriate (which they still do), as the fate that we see for him, particularly in the last four episodes as he truly deals with the fallout of his behavior, feels all too similar to the real-life examples of this same sort of person that we see time and time again.
These final episodes were just consistently breathtaking with the things that they went for, and while the dramatic heights it reached were just staggering, it's also delightful to see the show didn't lose its comedic edge one bit. While there's definitely a few episodes where it felt like I was hardly laughing at all (not a criticism, because I was certainly always compelled, to say the least), these final episodes still leave a ton of room for humor that constantly had me in stitches. It's truly spectacular to see a show this great stay true to its self all the way to the very end, and manage to go out on one of the highest notes imaginable after such a healthy six-season run. You definitely get the sense watching these episodes that the writers were a bit rushed to get to their intended ending with less time than they anticipated, and while a few of the minor plot strands do feel rushed and some episodes incur a bit of tonal whiplash that this show is normally so good at naturally avoiding, but even still, they got to their ending on their own terms, and it turned out magically. Everyone has been (rightfully) talking about the penultimate episode -- one of the single most devastating things I have ever seen in my life -- but I think that shouldn't come at the expense of talking about the series finale, which should easily rank as one of the best ever. The last episode is essentially played out as a series of a few conversations, it's an epilogue that gives final touches to each of its main characters, and it couldn't have done those final moments any more perfectly. Once you get to the final scene, you realize that the series could not have possibly ended any other way. It's perfect, a tremendously beautiful conclusion, whose final few minutes have been weighing heavily on mind for the past day and surely much longer. By the last cut to credits, I was just sobbing.
I have nothing left to say other than that I'm eternally grateful to have this series in my life. Since first discovering it I've had the pleasure to be able to recommend it to almost all of the most important people in my life, all of whom loved it almost as much as I do. This is art that has life-changing power, and I've seen it. I've felt it myself. It's a shame to me that there are still so many people who have not experienced it for themselves. It has such a profound understanding of everything I've been struggling with for the last few years of my life and will likely continue to struggle with forever, and it's one of those works that will surely just stick with me for the rest of my life. There is just so much value to be found in something like this. It's deeply sad to see it go, but, as they say, it was nice while it lasted, one hell of a rodeo.

As someone who is married to a person struggling to write a dissertation, I found the representation of Diane’s writing process in the “Good Damage” episode to be painfully real.

Now that it's over, anyone wanna take on the daunting task of a final top ten episodes list? 1. "Free Churro" (5x06) 2. "Fish out of Water" (3x04) 3. "The Old Sugarman Place" (4x02) 4. "The View from Halfway Down" (6x15) 5. "Time's Arrow" (4x11) 6. "Let's Find Out" (2x08) 7. "Escape from L.A." (2x11) 8. "The Showstopper" (5x11) 9. "Stupid Piece of Shit" (4x06) 10. "Ruthie" (4x09) HMs (in chronological order): "The Telescope," "Downer Ending," "The Shot," "The BoJack Horseman Show," "Best Thing That Ever Happened," "It's You," "That's Too Much, Man," "That Went Well," "Underground," "The Dog Days Are Over," "INT. SUB," "Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos," "A Horse Walks into a Rehab," "The New Client," "Surprise!," "The Face of Depression," "Good Damage," "Nice While it Lasted," and like dozens of others, basically every episode could be an honorable mention for me. Was thinking of doing a top ten moments too but that'd be even harder with an even more exhausting list of honorable mentions ... maybe some other time!

I'll come back later with thoughts on the ending - credits just rolled, and I'm an emotional mess. I'll just say, those final two episodes - everything I love about this show, and the perfect way to go out.
A rough top 10 episodes: 1) "Fish Out of Water" (3x04) 2) "Free Churro" (5x06) 3) "Time's Arrow" (4x11) 4) "Downer Ending" (1x11) 5) "The View from Halfway Down" (6x15) 6) "That's Too Much, Man!" (3x11) 7) "It's You" (3x10) 8) "Ruthie" (4x09) 9) "Nice While It Lasted" (6x16) 10) "The Old Sugarman Place" (4x02)
HM: "Escape From L.A." (2x11) "Best Thing That Ever Happened (3x09) "Stupid Piece of Shit" (4x06) "What Time Is It Right Now" (4x12) "The Dog Days Are Over" (5x02) "The Showstopper" (5x11) "The New Client" (6x02)
Don't think there was ever an episode of the show that was less than 'good', though. God, I'll miss it.

Was thinking of doing a top ten moments too but that'd be even harder with an even more exhausting list of honorable mentions ... maybe some other time! This was still on my mind so I finally decided to take on this task, though I realized that I'd have to split it up between my favorite dramatic moments and my favorite comedic moments, doing a top ten for each of those and basically coming up with a top twenty altogether. Now obviously it's hard to constitute what is a "moment," something like "Free Churro" is basically just one long 20+ minute scene, and since it's my favorite episode maybe it'd also top this list(?), but anyway basically I deemed it ineligible ... Anyway, this was hastily put together and I'm surely overlooking a hell of a lot of stuff, but I just wanted to at least highlight some of my absolute favorite moments from the show's entire run... 1. "But ... I've never had a brother." [What Time is it Right Now] 2. "All we have are the connections we make." / Ending [Fish Out of Water] 3. Secretaridad reads his poem. [The View from Halfway Down] 4. Eddie plays the piano while Beatrice sings "I'll Always Think of You." [The Old Sugarman Place] 5. "That little voice ... that goes away, right?" [Stupid Piece of Shit] 6. "Can you taste the ice cream, Mom?" [Time's Arrow] 7. "Yeah, well, it makes me feel better." [Ruthie] 8. Gina's musical number. [The Showstopper] 9. "You learn that you can survive." [The Dog Days Are Over] 10. "Yeah. This is nice." [Nice While it Lasted] (Honorable mentions to Sarah Lynn's death, the final moments of season 3, BoJack remembering the first time he drank ... those are just some off the top of my head.)
1. Todd and Mr. Peanutbutter write the Oscar nominations. [It's You] 2. "Spaghetti or not, here I come." [That Went Well] 3. "Elijah Wood." [Let's Find Out] 4. Famous Actor Zach Braff is sacrificed to the fire. [Underground] 5. BoJack gives Mr. Peanutbutter his crossover episode. [The Face of Depression] 6. Mr. Peanutbutter and Pickles argue while everyone tries to sneak out of their house. [Surprise!] 7. Halloween in January. [Later] 8. Character Actress Margo Martindale stands her ground in the discount art museum. [The Shot] 9. "What are YOU doing here?" [Brand New Couch] 10. The three-way phone call. [Start Spreading the News] (Honorable mentions to the ski race for the governorship, BoJack and Cuddlywhiskers writing their show, everything Vincent Adultman, the Meow-Meow Fuzzyface "loose cannon" debate, the Quentin Tarantulino snack basket ... I could go on.)

Right now I just finished Fish Out Of Water. There are just sooooo many hidden jokes here that it could've been the show I'd watch repeatedly over and over for like years, but damn if this show doesn't make me sad. That's not a point against it, of course, this is VERY maturely handled, and does not hold back. Some of the best television out there, and get on it if you haven't already. BRILLIANT show, and if this only gets better from here on, my oh my.
That said, I'll be hella disappointed if my birthday cake doesn't have "Happy Birthday Dexter and use a pretty font" written on it. Also Mr Peanutbutter needs a different party planner.
Also, if your favourite character isn't character actress Margo Martindale, you're making some wrong decisions.

I honestly have a tough time identifying much with any one character in particular. I can identify with all of them at certain moments, but I can't point out one as being my guy/gal/dog/horse/cat.

Something I was thinking about the other day, are people's favourite characters the ones they associate with the most? It is for me. Great question and I kinda can't put it in any better than Mike did -- I identify with all five of the main characters at some point or another (less so Todd and Mr. PB than the other three, but still, definitely all of them), and I also love all five of the main characters, so it's hard to say. Diane is definitely the one I associate with the most and I think a lot of the time she is my favorite because I see myself in her so much which is always a big reason why it's been so off-putting when the character gets hated on on the Internet (that and, you know, the sexism of it all). On the flip side of that, Princess Carolyn is without a doubt one of my three favorites and at times probably my top favorite, especially from season 3 onward when she's so incredibly written, and a lot of the times I find her arc most interesting is when it explores that which I can't personally identify with... so, to some extent definitely yes, but to another extent I'd say a lot of the strength comes from opening my mind to something unfamiliar in the character's experiences (which even happens A LOT with someone like Diane, too).

Funnily enough those are the two I associate with the most. I'd say the only one I don't really associate with at all is actually BoJack himself.

I definitely find myself identifying with BoJack more than I'm comfortable with. Though he's another case where obviously when it comes to his super toxic behavior I feel incredibly distanced from the character and can only watch with disgust ... but at the same time he's always so compellingly written and there's always so much going on with him that he's never not a "favorite" for me.

I finished binging this show a couple of days ago and it got really, really good from season 4 onward. The writing in later seasons was impeccable and I really liked the random celebrity cameos (Felicity Huffman before she fell from grace and Laura Linney, for example) and the hidden puns.
The only one I had a problem with was Todd. He was such a pointless character and 90% of his gags were about as funny as an ingrown toenail. My favourite is probably Princess Carolyn. Her tongue twisters were fucking hilarious.

I'm on lockdown with my family, also the show made me go to some really real places, so rn I'm not watching it at the same speed as before so that I don't spiral down while locked. That said, I was able to watch like 3-4 episodes of S03 these days anyway. This universe seems to be the only one where I prefer the cat to the dog. Both are brilliant characters, but I just want to give Princess Carolyn a hug. Also, Todd and PB nodded DDL for sound editing That board was a goldmine.
Brilliant show.

when this quarantine is over, gunna get the free churro monologue tattooed on my back
Free Churro is the latest episode which I've watched btw. I watched it yesterday and had to pause because of other stuff, and also because it's so overwhelming in the best way possible.
Season 4 was sooooo good, especially all the flashback parts for the Horseman/Sugarman family. That stuff brought a new dread to the series, which was already there thanks to the other characters and their struggles at present. That storyline was straight up horror, and it was done waaay better in that part than some films actually promoted as horror. Bojack's storyline was the primary highlight for me, as is for others as well, but some of the other stuff, like Princess Carolyn's story helped alleviate the said dread, the loss of time. Both lines were keeping it on the surface, and were showing the loss in contrasting ways: Bojack by showing what's lost (his family's legacy, Sarah Lynn), and PC by trying to get it all she could. Others storylines were dope as well, and brilliantly handled. Peanutbutter's election run was fucking hilarious, especially the one where their house goes underground, and he and Diane had to break up sometime, you know. Todd's asexuality was well handled as well. The latter two I don't really have much to say about myself, but I did like those as well, they were well handled in all ways.
Some of the stuff I've written here might be gibberish, but idc.
Also, we should be easier on ourselves, you know.

Need to mull it over, but overall a great, great show.

Now that it's over, anyone wanna take on the daunting task of a final top ten episodes list? I'm game! Not as head over heels for this show as others so coming up with a top 10 list isn't as daunting as it would be for BB or GoT, buuuut it did have some incredible knock-out moments and a couple individual episodes stand among the best in the genre I've seen. 01) "That's Too Much, Man!" (3x11) - this one hit me like a sledgehammer 02) "Free Churro" (5x06) 03) "Fish Out of Water" (3x04) 04) "The Stopped Show" (5x12) 05) "Time's Arrow" (4x11) 06) "Nice While It Lasted" (6x16) 07) "The View from Halfway Down" (6x15) 08) "Head in the Clouds" (5x10) 09) "A Horse Walks into a Rehab" (6x01) 10) "Let's Find Out" (2x08) honorable mentions "The Face of Depression" (6x07) "INT. SUB" (5x07) "lovin that cali lifestyle!!" (4x10)
