Despite the Shawshank Redemption having been nominated for best picture and the secondary lead/narrator Morgan Freeman being nominated for best actor, Tim Robbins who plays the primary lead was not Oscar nominated. Is it because of the nature of the character ? Too introverted and quiet to warrant an oscar nomination ? I've always been curious about that snub.

Probably a hard category. 1994 was a strong year for leading actor.

I've always been surprised that Tim Robbins was not nominated for an Oscar for The Shawshank Redemption (I think he was better than Freeman) However though Robbins was nominated for the Sag Award is Morgan Freeman most acclaimed (Golden Globe nominee and Sag Award) so maybe it should not be so surprising. Now the eternal question is Who was sixth in the voting? Tim Robbins or Hugh Grant for Four Weddings and a Funeral?

Not sure why he was snubbed... he was great though and he would have been a deserving nominee. Maybe Freeman was seen as more respected, having already been nominated multiple times.

Shawshank wasn't the behemoth that it is today in 1994. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were fifth in line for Picture, and Freeman either fourth or fifth in Actor.
