You’re doing the same thing to me on here though, no? Didn’t you call me delusional? Comparing me to Arthur Fleck? (a character with mental health problems) I think that’s more personal than me joking around about you being a fanbot of a couple actors. But hey, you do you. Ever heard of taste of your own medicine? Don’t like it, don’t act like a child next time.

Anyways, back ON TOPIC....
Does this performance cement Joaquin as one of the best actors to have ever graced our screens?

Fair do’s. I know Joaquin has fierce competition this year and simply won’t stroll his way to an Oscar; I’m not that obtuse. But we’re on the cusp of awards season and we all have our faves so this back and forth banter is all in good of fun. Having said that, anyone that doesn’t think Phoenix’s performance ranks as one of the greatest of all time is quite simply a blind Wockeen hatebot and knows absolutely nothing about the craft of acting. Horseshit. It's a strenuous physical performance, but founded on absolutely piss-poor writing. Not remotely one of the greatest performances of all time. It doesn't even have a great moment, like the dull The Master at least had with the transcendent processing scene.

People quote lines from that daily, and the palpable effect in the theater and afterwords was tremendous. Anton Chigurh and Darth Vader on steroids (which are both absolutely iconic, incredible, amazing performances in their own right). This isn't even 1/10 of that. I don't see how someone watches the pencil trick scene alone and rates this alongside Ledger. Delusional!

They’re completely different interpretations though, so it’s silly to try and compare the two. One Joker was fully formed, the other is just blossoming. Just appreciate the greatness of both actors and what they brought to the character instead of trying to pit one against the other.

Phoenix elevates weak material. A lot of the plot points felt contrived or like they were only in there to do fan service, but Phoenix almost sells them. I still think it's a very good movie, but it was also disappointing because it's always reaching for greatness and could easily have grasped it if it wasn't bogged down by the very comic book elements that Phillips was trying to run away from. Two scenes could go on to become defining moments of Phoenix's career, though. One, the dance down the stairs. And two, the Murray Franklin talk. I think The Master is still, easily, Phoenix's best performance, but this could well be his 2nd best (with some competition from Two Lovers).

I haven't seen it yet so I'm not "stanning" for anyone yet.
The Joker is still an iconic character. Someone has already won an Oscar for playing the character. It's not a typical "comic book" movie. Phoenix, with 3 nominations, may seem more overdue than Driver. I agree that Box Office isn't a *huge* factor, but tends to elevate genre films. It will help keep Phoenix in the conversation.
We just don't know how the industry will respond yet.

Nice review. Do you think Phoenix can win? I think he can, but it'll be very tough. My opinion on the race didn't change much after watching Joker. It's the kind of performance the Academy will like, but I don't think they'll take to the movie. I still think Driver is the favorite with Phoenix as the challenger.

I don't think it's going to be an easy road for Joaquin, Adam Driver is getting some seriously amazing reviews for Marriage Story which is going to be a big contender.

Now I want to watch the whole movie again with Rogen's laugh dubbed over Phoenix's.

Shit, there were so many sources during pre-production saying Scorsese would produce Joker, that up to now I believed he was indeed one of the producers... (And just googled it and found out he has an exec. producer credit in Uncut Gems. Oh, well...)
