I thought he did very well last night until the outtakes part, and then it got sort of awkward. He still handled it pretty well though. Yeah, this was on Kimmel. No need to show that clip at all. Apparently it was staged. Like his Letterman appearance years ago

How were the first Hangover and War Dogs bad? Haven't seen War Dogs, the Combination of Miles Teller/Jonah hill makes me puke, but Hangover is a refreshing comedy. Yeah War Dogs was alright

Venice is looking like a very, very long time ago now. It's about to fall into the 60's on Rotten Tomatoes (currently on 70%), which for a movie like this, is horrible. Comic book based films need that sheen of reviews and critical adulation to crack that race, and that's going away fast. Good thing it'll make a shitload of money, but it's BP hopes are on pretty shaky ground now ( Joker basically needs to hope things work out like last year, where industry voters ignored critics and nominated a bunch of movies with mediocre reviews). Joaquin is also taking a bit of a hit here. I thought if the movie's reviews stayed strong, he could potentially start doing a critics awards sweep and start looking undeniable on the way to a Best Actor Oscar, but critics groups rarely go hard for actors in films with reviews now this middling.

Phoenix was never winning critics awards for this lol. His path is this becoming a huge populist hit. But even still, this isn’t the crowd pleaser Bohemian Rhapsody was. His path to the Oscar is becoming increasingly difficult.

Phoenix was never winning critics awards for this lol. His path is this becoming a huge populist hit. But even still, this isn’t the crowd pleaser Bohemian Rhapsody was. His path to the Oscar is becoming increasingly difficult. Well, it's easy to claim now that he was never winning critics awards for this now that it's reviews are dropping like flies. But when Phoenix was getting stunning personal reviews in Venice and the movie was winning the Volpi Cup, a potential critics sweep for him looked not only likely, but probable. Phoenix is arguably the best regarded film actor of his generation, considered due for an Oscar, in an iconic role in a film that won a major European festival award. Usually high potential to be critics awards catnip. It's all gone a bit to shit since then, as critics are not following the script with the last batch of reviews. I mean, Phoenix may still pick up a critics award here or there. He's still got that regard by them, and will be in the race based on the strength of his personal reviews. But yes, I agree the populist route appears to be his main path to a win now.

No. The movie had a 75 on Metacritic out of Venice. It was clear then he wasn’t winning them. Especially with Adam Driver’s film in the mid 90s and even better personal reviews.

Especially with Adam Driver’s film in the mid 90s and even better personal reviews. 75 was not a low enough score to make a judgement on it's final score with critics, especially as it left the festival winning it's top film prize, which is one hell of a glow-up. Obviously it could have gone several points higher and become a critics player. We've now seen that it's doing the complete opposite. I don't think anyone would have predicted a low 60's metacritic after Venice. So yeah, this is one of those hindsight calls, but I didn't see anyone saying "lol. Phoenix will never win critics awards for this" at the time, probably because it would have sounded like a silly call at the time.

Your Driver bias is hilarious. The only reason you want this film to fail is because you know Joaquin is his main threat and most likely still the frontrunner. Phoenix’s reviews are MILES better than Driver’s.

Everyone needs to calm down with Joaquin and Driver all the time......Driver has drawbacks too - said it a billion times, find me the last Best Actor winner who shares his film opposite a female (haven't seen it, but..) - especially if she wins (that's going back to As Good As It Gets time). Driver could win but those reviews don't mitigate that fact.
Phoenix will have people rally around him too.
Long season, peaks and valleys, surges and lulls and 3 months to go in the year etc.

Driver will win most of the critics, I actually think De Niro will win a few too. I still expect Phoenix to go all the way with the televised awards.

I can move the goalposts all day here, too.

There is no actor playing the lead in a comic book film ever with those type of reviews for his performance - it's uncharted territory. You'd have a better point if you played it straight and just assessed it like that.....

Joker is going to make so much more money than Marriage Story... more money, more campaign... more campaign, more chances...
I haven't seen either, I don't really give a shit about either... but fucking hell, relax.
