Even with good reviews, it might be a top 15 contender. Contenders with good reviews Marriage Story Parasite Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Ford v Ferrari The Report The Farewell Unseen but possible contenders 1917 The Irishman Little Women Jojo Rabbit A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Just Mercy The Goldfinch Queen and Slim im not picking up good vibes for The Goldfinch. Same. But lets add Waves.

I'm so happy that Phoenix will be getting his Best Actor award for what looks like a great great performance and I can't wait for him to give some weird ass speech. Such an awesome actor 😍

I would like to take this moment to say that the guy who made The Hangover now has a Golden Lion.
God help us all.

No idea. It could be one of several things. 1. It's a small jury and maybe not enough of them liked the movie as much as the other ones in contention. 2. Maybe the movie was so uniformly strong that it just didn't stand out in any particular area (which is a bad argument given the movies that won, but what the heck). 3. Maybe it felt too traditional and they wanted to go with movies with more of an edge. 4. Maybe the jury members didn't know what the fuck they were doing. 5. Maybe I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. Could be as simple as it being a Netflix production. I doubt it, considering a Netflix film won the Golden Lion last year.

I want to state this also.
Not only does the director of The Hangover have a golden lion, the director of Dumb and Dumber won an Oscar for best picture.
Next, the director of 13 Going on 30 will win Cannes.

So are you against directors evolving or broadening their material or should they only be judged on particular films they made early in their career?

I actually think this result is better than Phoenix winning the Volpi, because now the film as a whole now looks A LOT more prestigious. And that was the point of putting it in comp at Venice, WB has been working over the clock to position this as a prestige pic and not just another comic book movie.
I have to think that the film now has a legitimate shot at a BP nom which also helps Phoenix ftw. I’m sensing that this will be a very close race between Phoenix and Adam Driver. I was leaning towards the latter before this, but now I’m genuinely not sure. Will be exciting to watch unfold for sure.

I am rooting for Driver just because he was my pick to win early on, lol, but I'll be happy if it means keeping another film written by freaking Anthony McCarten from winning this category. Plus I do love Phoenix too, and he's due. (I'm just sad because this is the closest I've gotten to calling a winner early on since Spotlight won Best Picture, but I dropped that several points near the end of the season so I don't know how much credit I get for it, lol.)

It's early days yet, but I don't think Driver or Pryce (who I don"t think will be nodded, as there is no way they can fraud Hopkins into another category) will be Phoenix's biggest threats. I was banging his drum before, but Eddie Murphy's ecstatic reception at TIFF for Dolemite Is My Name confirms him as a serious potential challenger. Basically being called his best performance in 20 years, and the film itself is recieving loving comparisons to Ed Wood and The Disaster Artist. He's got the praise and it's going to be a massive crowdpleaser. And his comeback narrative will play it's own part.
I think Murphy should take the Comedy/ Musical Globe with relative ease, and might be the one who can challenge Phoenix for the SAG.
I may be totally wrong (there will be a lot of major snubs this season), as it's early days, but I can see a potential Phoenix vs Murphy race, with Phoenix having the edge.

You bring up valid points so there’s a possibility that Murphy could be there or thereabouts. I’m also looking forward his performance in Dolemite; the role looks pretty great.

As expected, Venice loved the shit out of this but the North American crowd have now come out to play. Surprisingly however, Anne Thompson gave it a rave, and that can only bode well for the film given she’s a stalwart of AMPAS.

Slant Magazine's review - "Joker Is a Punishingly Self-Serious Mishmash of Borrowed Parts" "Todd Phillips’s Joker is a film that might have been dreamed up by one of the cynical douche bros at the center of the director’s Hangover trilogy during a blacked-out stupor." lol
