So how would this be Oscar eligible if it's for a streaming company? I hate Netflix as it wasn't made for tv and fck watching films on your phone or tablet rather than a big screen. Do you only watch Netflix on your phone or tablet and not on a television? I almost exclusively watch it on my tv.

Pavan Looks like it, unfortunately. So how would this be Oscar eligible if it's for a streaming company? I hate Netflix as it wasn't made for tv and fck watching films on your phone or tablet rather than a big screen. It's eligible if they give it a qualifying theater run, which they no doubt will. Beasts of No Nation got one and was eligible for awards consideration (which is why Elba got a Globe nomination and won SAG), but the problem with Netflix is that they go directly against the current system: by making their films available on their platform on the same day they hit cinemas, they're giving theater chains the finger. There's usually a 90-day window in which films play only in theaters before they're available on VOD/home media, and when Netflix eliminate that window, they drastically diminish theatrical grosses. That's why I don't see any Netflix film doing terribly well at the Oscars beyond Best Documentary anytime soon: the Academy doesn't seem keen to throw a bone to a distributor that's going against the grain and shaking up the whole industry model. Amazon doesn't do that (their films all play in theaters for a long time before they're available to stream), and that's why they had so much success this year. I guess Scorsese is as likely as anyone to deliver the first Netflix original that breaks through in the main categories, but after the cold shoulder they gave to Silence, I'm not too confident he'll pull it off. The Irishman seems more of a movie AMPAS will go for than Silence did tho. Paramount's collosal campaign disaster + Subject Matter didn't help Silence at all. They do go for gangster films if done well (Goodfellas comes to mind immediately). Netflix might do some negative damage, but no way Scorsese was the reason for the Silence shutout, and if this one is as good as it's supposed to be, Scorsese won't do any harm as well. If it falls, I could call right now it'd be Netflix's fault.

Oh jesus. After years of waiting for it, I hope it doesn't turn into some Gilliam/Don Quixote-esque fiasco now.

Oh jesus. After years of waiting for it, I hope it doesn't turn into some Gilliam/Don Quixote-esque fiasco now. I hope this smooths over. STX bought overseas rights at Cannes for $50m, but the problem is they've been selling portions of it to other buyers, and THOSE buyers are the ones freaking out and who STX feel they'll have to protect if Netflix overrides. IDKKK. Speaking of Gilliam/Don Quixote fiasco. WTF! Still can't find funding?

www.premiere.fr/Cinema/News-Cinema/Martin-Scorsese-Le-vrai-sujet-de-Silence-c-est-l-essence-de-la-foiSo here's a Scorsese interview with a French publication from a month or so ago. "We have a great script signed by Steven Zaillian. We are financing the film. I am faced with a real dilemma, there. When you get older, things change, your relationship to the family changes, so I do not know exactly what to do. I really want to do The Irishman with Bob, that's for sure. But for me it all comes down to the amount of control I'll have on the finished product." Sounds a little wary! And as an aside, there's this: "I would also like to remake a film with Leo. I love him, I miss him." (what film would they be remaking? and is 'remake' what he said - or was it wonky translation?)

Hoping it happens for 2018 they change their strategy and give it a decent theatrical run before streaming. Also intrigued by what he would want to remake with Leo. Man, I wish directors didn't have to be so secretive about their unannounced projects.

Beast Of No Nation was released theatrically overseas. Netflix can release it domestically and let STX keep their internatinal rights.

It is more to do a movie again with Leo. I would imagine that Netflix would prefer it to be perceived as a Netflix movie and use it as a tool in newer market less establish than the US and not just a movie released by Netflix in some particular market.

More vowels in this movie than an Italian restaurants specialty menu........combined ages more than if you cut pacinoyes in half and count the rings X 2. It's finally happening and I am very happily not doubting until I see it. Joe Pesci, wow, there's a shocker huh, decided against doing nothing and drifting off further into nothingness and is doing the movie that you sort of got to do with the cast you got to do it with for the director you have to do it for. I guess sometimes you never can tell. Um. Filming through December - do people realize how many other crappy movies DeNiro and Pacino are missing doing because they're tied up with this? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
