This film is so close to genius, isn't it? I say "close" because of its treatment of the prostitute Nadia (ferociously performed by the incredible Annie Girardot) - she is initially given so much personality, but by film's end, she's little more than collateral damage in Rocco and Simone's tug-of-war. But, beyond this, the film is scorching - beautifully shot and powerfully resonant - Shakespearean in its scope, reminiscent of Greek tragedy in its emotional fullness. Also, it's impossible to deny its influence on Scorsese's 'Raging Bull' and Coppola's 'Godfather' trilogy. Visconti's vision will seemingly always inspire. Can you believe that I just saw this film for the first time last night? I know, I know... I still prefer other Visconti films to it (chiefly 'Senso' and 'The Leopard'), but what an achievement it is.

Five best Visconti?
1. 'Senso' 2. 'The Leopard' 3. 'Rocco and His Brothers' 4. 'Le Notti Bianche' 5. 'Sandra'
Still some I need to see... But that seems firm for now.

It's an amazing film, to be sure, but something about it has always rubbed me sort of the wrong way. It's stuck half way between being a latter day descendant of the neorealist movement, and some kind of overblown Sirkian melodrama. It doesn't quite work entirely as either, but executes aspects of both so well that it's awesome regardless.

I've been looking for a way to watch this for like a week now. I finally found a place I can rent it, but it says the run-time on the iTunes Store is 2:26. Everywhere else it's listed as 3hr. Am I missing something? Does anybody have a link?

It's a 3 hour film and there are many prints floating around at that 2:26 length from the initial releases and it can vary wildly in image and sound which can kill that movie - I don't think in the US the full cut was even shown until the early 2000s - the 3 hour version is the one to see if you can.

It is Visconti's crowning achievement and the movie he most cared of and was proud of.
