That is surprising. I do think it will do better once it gets good reviews but $40 million is low number for a Nolan movie. I know Interstellar only did $47 million but that was released in November but Dunkirk is a summer release. The posters and trailers have been underwhelming and the film is not projecting Tom Hardy much. So anything it gets it's because of Nolan. What do you guys think of the low estimates? link

It's a busy month, and people are probably more interested in seeing franchise films than a war movie. It also isn't riding on the back of any big stars, as all of Nolan's films have benefited from up to this point. I have a feeling it'll easily surpass these estimates if the buzz is good, but with no reception to go off of at this point, it's hard to tell.

Not too surprising, WWII movies rarely open big. Even Saving Private Ryan opened to what would be about $45M in today's money. It should have long legs though, assuming the reviews are strong.

The fact that it's tracking to open at those numbers in the first place is a testament to the draw power of Nolan himself.

For a non-franchise and non-genre summer-released Britain-centric World War II film with no box-office draws in its cast, that's still impressive. I don't expect it to hit the billion mark or even where Interstellar landed, but for what it is, I think it'll do healthy business and it should have legs leading into August and possibly even early September.

How much do we think Harry Styles is going to play a factor here?

How much do we think Harry Styles is going to play a factor here? They waited until the past day to release a trailer with him speaking in it. If they decide to play up his casting and have him go on a big publicity tour for the film (which they should and I'm expecting), then I assume Dunkirk's tracking will tick up. If they drop the ball and continue to have him be a relative non-factor in their marketing, then I don't think we can credit Styles all that much for the film's opening weekend.

How much do we think Harry Styles is going to play a factor here? If they continue to not promote him, I doubt he'll be a factor at all.

Yeah, I saw the new stuff with him in it yesterday and the fangirls are already going crazy. They would be silly not to play up his casting over the next couple of weeks.

They dropped two tv spots yesterday where he talks in both of them, so I think they're just getting started with the Styles push.

Sounds reasonable. I was always surprised when I saw huge box office predictions for it.

Each Penny earned will be because of Nolans name alone

How much do we think Harry Styles is going to play a factor here? Movies aren't successful because of stars these days, so I can't imagine he has much to do with that number.

Not a great number, but it should be a big hit worldwide regardless.

Around $150-160M, give or take. It certainly wouldn't have cost as much as Nolan's previous efforts, given the lack of A-list stars which with their salaries would have significantly bumped it up. And leeway on taxes would have helped immensely But practical effects, props etc that he's summoned for this film aren't on the cheap side either, and it's scale is still pretty huge. Maybe $150M may be pushing it, but I can see at least a low to mid $120M.

That along with no A-list stars might be the reason for relatively less budget. But it features 80 min (75% of the film's run time)of IMAX footage, highest in any Nolan films so far. So $120M seems fair.

40 million sounds pretty reasonable (considering the strong competition it has going up against it) .

I think it finishes above $40 million for the weekend, perhaps closer to $45M or $50M. Reviews + word of mouth should help it tremendously, and it'll have great legs.

Box Office Mojo estimates
Dunkirk (3,720 theaters) - $51.0 M Girls Trip (2,591 theaters) - $26.0 M War for the Planet of the Apes (4,100 theaters) - $24.8 M
Looks like the reviews really helped it.
