What do you think of him as an actor? His rise from drunken, drug-addicted parody to respected thespian sought by auteurs the world over?

He's turned into one of my favourite actors. I was never too impressed with him throughout most of his career, but his resume is spattered with great films and great performances in them. I prefer him when he's working in his native accent, as his accents aren't top drawer stuff, but they aren't bad on a distracting level.
I give him two lead actor wins for In Bruges and The Lobster. I don't give him any other nominations, but I've really liked his performances in:
Phone Booth Intermission Horrible Bosses Fright Night Seven Psychopaths Saving Mr. Banks Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them True Detective, in which he did strong enough work in a lame duck show and his one episode appearance on Scrubs was a hoot.
He's also going to be in two of my most anticipated films of 2017, The Beguiled & The Killing of a Sacred Deer, so I have plenty to look forward to.
On a side-note, it helps that he's as easy on the eye now at 41, as he was when he broke out in his early twenties. I don't really have too much of an issue with his wild-boy days. He enjoyed his youth and success, he then got his life back and track. He seems like a decent all round bloke now.

I think he's great. Always has been, I like him since "Tigerland" and found it unfair that his image in media and his good looks somehow overshadowed his work as an actor, as he was also terrific in "Phone Booth" and "Intermission". Some great filmmakers casted him but I guess he had a bad luck that the films turned out to be some of the least acclaimed ("Miami Vice", "Cassandra's Dream") and even at times, ridiculed ("Alexander") works of their directors. I didn't have much problem with his action film roles. Sure, the films were no masterpieces but he had a compelling presence. But I'm glad that since ever his brilliant turn in "In Bruges" got attention, he manages to get great roles more often than before. He also has an impressive range, from "Fright Night" to "The Lobster", from "Ondine" to "Horrible Bosses". He stole the show in "Saving Mr. Banks", he was probably the best thing about second season of "True Detective" and he seems to have hell of a great year with "The Beguiled", "Killing of a Sacred Deer" and "Inner City" which I hope will bring him his first Oscar nom.

Sensational actor! And dare I say underrated? He was the high light of True Detective Season 2. Such a great character and his storyline/acting kept me watching.
Also brilliant in In Bruges, Tigerland, Miami Vice & many other films. Looking forward to The Begulled & Inner City

One of the most underrated actors out there. Does he have the best filmography out there? No, but he does have some hitters and he usually gives a performance his all, even if the movie isn't that good. I rarely see him phone it in. And yeah, he's definitely putting a lot more interesting effort nowadays with the projects he's choosing. He's better suited for indie stuff more than big blockbusters, which is why I think he never became a mega star.

He is excellent. He just doesn't get a lot of parts that really suit him. I thought he was the saving grace of True Detective's 2nd Season.

Very good actor. His best roles have often been supporting, but he's done some really good performances as a lead too (In Bruges, Phone Booth), recently I quite like him in Fantastic Beasts, though I wasn't a fan of what they did to his character at the end.

Very very underrated. Should've had Bradley Cooper's career.

Colin's a good actor. I remember when he was considered the next best thing but somehow, he blew it. I really hope he gets another chance to prove himself. In addition, he's beyond cute.

Loved him for a long time... Tigerland, Phone Booth, In Bruges, Pride and Glory, etc.
I still think it's a pity he didn't get a single thing thrown his way for S2 of True Detective.

Around Daredevil it seemed like he was the next big thing that never quite arrived... his comeback of sorts has been really cool to see the last couple years. Even if he never tops In Bruges I can't be mad, he's a very watchable and interesting actor, for sure. I'd love for him to tackle more comedies as well.

Really liked him in In Bruges, the rest of his work that I've seen has been fine, but nothing too noteworthy. Wasn't really crazy about him in The Lobster, but that was probably more a result of my mixed reaction to the film.

He could have so easily gone off the rails into being a nobody actually - but since this thread is 5 years old now - you know - back when we had good threads and stuff - what's our current take? Since the last post - notable performances in The Batman, Killing of a Sacred Deer, and now a possible Oscar nomination.....he's worked with a lot of big time actors Pacino, Washington, Chastain, Kidman - always nice and polite when he speaks of them - genuinely seems like a good guy - as much as you can tell about stuff like that anyway.........he's only 46......is his best work still to come? He has a big Apple TV series too coming in 2023 too ( Sugar)....

Very talented actor, I've been impressed from the start (Tigerland, who remains among his very best performances), I think he's been a bit unlucky in his career, I certainly expected him to do better based on his talent, charisma, looks, popularity (circa 2002), etc... I'm really looking foward to watch his new collaboration with McDonagh.

His career has been so exciting to watch. He's been in popular mainstream films for over 20 years but The Lobster was when he went from a good actor to a great one, and with Sacred Deer a year later I thought it was Lanthimos's deadpan style & dialogue that was bringing the best out of him but he's been doing nothing but great work since then and has continued again and again to show his range, expand his resume, and continue working with interesting directors. Would love to see him nab his first Oscar nom and can't wait to see where he goes next. The North Water wouldn't have been worth seeing without his utterly transformative souped-up performance as main antagonist, a thuggish Henry Drax. The guy is a bear.
