urbanpatrician just said this about Barbie..........in Pop Culture you see it all the time outside of movies (Taylor Swift's new album is like a total test case)............Oppenheimer could be argued that in the mechanics of a "non-blockbuster blockbuster" it's more interesting as a business triumph than a cinematic one maybe......... What are some movies that are way more interesting to talk about for you, or write about than they are to actually watch? For me........PITA exhibit A: Tree of Life:

The Lord of the Rings has lots of fun stories behind it and I admire the craft a lot... but I think the director was misguided in how *dramatic* the whole thing was, hurting it as a story.
Tons of fun talking about the behind the scenes stuff or chatting with people who are fans of it though. Their passion makes me happy it exists.

First recent thing that comes to mind is Crimes of the Future, which I still like and rate a 7/10, but I do remember feeling like it was a movie more interesting to think about than to watch.
I think I recall you once saying that about Dogtooth(?)

I think I recall you once saying that about Dogtooth(?) I like Dogtooth a lot but I probably did say that ........ I saw that movie with my ex who is Greek and she saw things in it that are more nuanced -sort of like with Zhang Yimou's early great works............ in that the film can be read on multiple societal levels - most obviously a political one - ie the "Daddy State" sort of shields the populace from anything outside of Greece's own borders........so the father in that movie is more than just that if you read it that way....... Fascinating movie - also in the frightening Fassbinder like scene where he attacks (kills?) the hooker for "ruining" his son by letting him be corrupted by videos etc and things like that......the movie makes a real interesting narrative choice in terms of how much time goes by before you understand why characters are behaving the way they're behaving........it is a much more effective film if you do not know a synopsis of the plot and thinks the first ~30+ minutes are just really batshit crazy

I think I recall you once saying that about Dogtooth(?) I can say the same thing about Dogtooth, and while I did end up enjoying it a lot by the end of it, I had much more fun listening to my friend just rip the movie apart. Polarizing movies like that are always better discussing than watching

Taylor Swift isn't interesting to listen to or talk about
Anyway, I think Metropolis applies here to me. Very interesting to read about just in terms of the production and its status as a kind of proto-fascist time capsule from a very important time and place in history. But I've seen it 3 times I think and it always just kind of goes by for me.

A lot of horror is like this for me. The Purge and The Human Centipede are nothingburgers to me as films but the overall concepts/ideas/absurdities have been fun to discuss in many ways over the years.

The Island of Dr. Moreau. Stories of Brando deliberately consuming tons of cabbage in order to fart during his takes with Kilmer or of the fired director sneaking back onto the set and observing the rest of the filming as an extra in full creature makeup are far more exciting than the actual film.

So I went down the rabbit hole of its trivia page after this mention and particulary loved how biblical this one sounds:

You stole mine. I'm going to go with L'Eclisse. Not the most interesting film to watch in action (no offense Antonioni lovers), but after the ending, you want to discuss. Some films take until after the ending credits to reflect and value.

This is the case with a lot of Godard's films, especially Hail Mary (a movie I quite like) and King Lear (a movie I admire but don't particularly love watching).

Having watched Barbie last night, I am *overflowing* with things to say about how contradictory and moronic of a political scREEd it is, but it is also one of the worst movies I've ever experienced in my life. I mean, let's get this straight: The Barbies have been "brainwashed" into having happy lives - with nothing more than a random line about smallpox to justify how the fuck this could happen because Gerwig is a fucking hack - and it is only a screeching, contradictory rant from a modern feminist that hates her life that saves them from happiness. (Her whole speech can be countered with "that's life for everyone, darling - nothing about this makes you special." In fact, the only parts that are specific to women are things that men couldn't care less about - no man will care that his girlfriend/wife says she wants to be thin, it is only crazy lefty brainwashed women who will demean you for being healthy! Also, the system isn't rigged against women, it's rigged against the poor... something that Gerwig could never understand.) And THEN the Evil Barbies kidnap these women and "deprogram" them - IN THEIR OWN WORDS, is this shit sinister or what!? - by KIDNAPPING THEM and TYING THEM DOWN AS THEY ARE FORCED TO LISTEN TO FEMINIST TALKING POINTS, making them realize that they are unhappy. This is HILARIOUS to me, that Gerwig is actually saying that women are happier being objects. It is only a small group of bitter women poisoning the well that ruins things. She is so incompetent at her own propaganda that she argues the opposite point by accident. She makes her strawman patriarchy look LIKE A WONDERFUL THING! And then the Barbies prey upon the Kens trying to be kind and supportive by lying to them and deceiving them! (Side note: It is hilarious that the song the Kens sing to their Barbies is about a man being emotionally abused by his girlfriend. Is Gerwig secretly a right-winger? Is this movie a psy-op?) The men in Kendom are all kind, trying to help the Barbies when asked questions about how things work, or singing songs to them because they are being told that these songs are making the girls happy! The Kens all want to do the right thing whenever they are with their Barbies, and the women MANIPULATE THEM and TRY TO MAKE THEM MISERABLE AND HATE EACH OTHER! The men are trying to create healthy romantic relationships in this world, and the women are TOXIC, EVIL MONSTERS. When we get to the end and Ryan Gosling (God bless his soul) rips out his heart for our entertainment, Barbie doesn't even deign to speak with him as an equal and say that she isn't right for him, that she is not ready for this kind of relationship. Instead, she tells him that Ken isn't tied to her or to Beach or to anything and that he needs to find his own path... imagine being told that by the woman you love as she dumps you: "you need to find your own life where you aren't giving yourself to someone else." She is telling him to be alone, unloved, an incel who genuinely hates women because they despise him when he - and the other Kens, it isn't just Gosling! See the deprogramming brainwashing scene for Kens being great people - wants to share himself with someone else without being manipulated and abused. He is being told that genuine human connection between a man and woman is unobtainable and that he shouldn't even try. Barbie is evil. Long live Ken. This movie turned me into a misogynist.

LMAO at the Martin_Stett takedown. That's how you rip something to shreds. Open his spoiler tag.
BTW, I don't enjoy talking Barbie or Poor Things...... pacinoyes, so I gotta kinda correct you here. Why Lanthimos and Gerwig aren't a couple I've no clue. They both do these movies undertoned by these silly thoughts of inner womanly beauty projected onto a quirky lead. They're perfect for each other! Hollywood hackkkk.
