Of these three actors in big budget English language movies about the life of Napoleon, whom do you think gave the best performance as the French Emperor?
Marlon Brando in Desiree
Rod Steiger in Waterloo
Joaquin Phoenix in Napoleon
For me, this isn't even a contest. Steiger fares the best. Brando was miscast as Napoleon, and arguably so was Phoenix.

As much as I appreciate Phoenix playing Napoleon as a sex-crazed little freak, Steiger's the best of these three. Of course, none hold a candle to Albert Dieudonné.

Steiger, who was pretty good.
Brando's Napoleon is one of his least remarkable performances. Phoenix's choices are... peculiar, but I think a lot of them work, just not on any kind of incredible level.

Phoenix was a wasted opportunity.

Of those, Brando wins by default, though that's not saying much. Nobody plays to the back row like Steiger, who at least has his moments.
Second write-in vote for Terry Camilleri though, with an honourable mention to Albert Dieudonne.

Brilliant scene with Steiger as Napoleon in Waterloo. Steiger really conveys just how this man could have commanded the respect and loyalty of hundreds of thousands of men. That aura never came across with Brando, and not with Phoenix's man-child interpretation of Napoleon.

Correct answer is rather to skip all three and watch Philippe Torreton in Monsieur N. (2003) and Ian Holm in The Emperor's New Clothes (2001) for something much closer to a definitive Napoleon.
