(btw, pitting Lee against one of the all-time, GOAT level directors like Lynch, no matter the outcome, suggests he's the opposite of "small-time". More like "all-time". Lynch just has the movies in a way Lee does not even if you're going to say they're both great directors with equal command of the medium. Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks pilot, Inland Empire. Lost Highway too but I'm one of the only fans of that here (another thing for your "appreciation" thread I guess)

Lynch. But also helps that I love Lynch's specific eccentricities as a filmmaker, where those elements are probably what hold me back from fully embracing Lee's films.

That's another element, their styles are very distinct and very different so it matters which one you prefer. The top of Lynch's filmography is just a lot stronger even aside from that with all the stuff I mentioned plus Mulholland Drive, Straight Story, Wild at Heart. |

1 bump Side note: I did this poll because it was on some shitty Twitter thing .....I don't exactly think David Lynch is necessarily an "American GOAT" ......but he's a lot closer to it than (mostly, not always) small time hoodrat Spike Lee who has some good (and some bad) films imo, but not on a level of peak artistry as Lynch Carry on..... |
