There's been 6 movies since the 2nd year of the Obama administration that have really been in my opinion, next level..... if because I just like them, or they're just kinda masterpieces... which would define 3 of them.
I think Meek's Cutoff, The Wolf of Wall Street, and True Grit would be my top 3. Americana cinema was kinda down for a while, but those 3 resurrected it.
Then the next 3 would be Promising Young Woman, Toni Erdmann, and American Honey. If I go on a purely subjective basis........ Pain & Gain and Terminator: Dark Fate would make it too... I know lol rite?
Based on my choice 6 selections... it would indicate that I prefer 2010, 2013, and 2016 the most. My upper favorites were all situated in those 3 years.
As a bonus pick, I would go with 2014. No masterpieces, but there's Sharknado 2, Wild, Symphony no. 42, Interstellar, Gone Girl, and Pompeii that I never miss whenever they're on my youtube suggested or TV.

2018 is by far the best year for cinema since 2010. I actually consider it one of the best years of all time for film. Then I'll take 2016, 2014 and 2010 in that order.

Fools
Meek's Cutoff is probably the movie of the decade.

2016 is probably the best year since 2001. There were some amazing films released in 2019, 2021 and 2023.

2018 (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, La Flor, Liz and the Blue Bird, Shoplifters, Transit) and 2013 (Blue Is the Warmest Color, Madoka Magica: Rebellion, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Why Don't You Play in Hell, The Wind Rises) are so far above the others. I'm also taking 2011 (Girl Walk // All Day, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Himizu, Tyrannosaur) and 2015 (The Case of Hana and Alice, Mad Max: Fury Road, Our Little Sister) to round out my choices.

I’d have to look at each year to know for certain, but I know I really liked 2012 just gonna go with that out of laziness.

Since we're including 2010 that's it for me. One of my favorite years ever and the last great movie year as of now. Voted for 2015 and 2023 as well. The others don't stand out as much although 17, 18, and 20 (for obvious reasons on the last one) are pretty dire. If you look back at my old posts I was buying into the "death of cinema" hype during that time but the early 2020's have been an improvement so far.

2012 is the best. The Master, Amour, Zero Dark Thirty, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Hunt, A Royal Affair, Rust and Bone, Ernest and Celestine, The Impossible, Mud, Compliance are all good to great.
Followed by 2023.

2017 is pretty easily #1 for me - Blade Runner 2049, Three Billboards (2 all-timers) plus Phantom Thread, Dunkirk, and Lost City of Z (among all those directors' best films) all in the same year on top of some really good blockbuster/action stuff that year like Logan, Baby Driver, and War for the Planet of the Apes, etc.
For other years, I'd go with 2013, 2011, and 2016
Strangely, I remember 2012 looking really great on paper going into that year, but I think it's actually kind of weak in retrospect.
