Oscar & Emmy winning actor, a leading man of stage, film and television for 6 + decades with outstanding range....he's nearly 80 years old and has just gotten incredible reviews for his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin in Franklin. The man still has it, so let's give him his flowers while he's still with us, as one of the great screen actors of his generation (and yes, that generation is the 1970's).
A Benjamin Franklin scholar for Slate saying he can't believe how good Michael Douglas portrayal of Franklin is.

I get that 1987 was this year where no one felt passionate about any of the nominees, so he won.
Weird hes never been nominated since. He should've won for Falling Down. And another for Wonder Boys.
Plus hes staying relevant on TV with Behind the Candelabra and Franklin. I think hes in the Giamatti level of actors. Actually better because he has more good stuff where Giamatti is only great in American Splendor and Sideways. Will see The Holdovers when its here.

The role of Benjamin Franklin was considered a big risk for Mike. He himself admited he'd only really played contemporary roles. Men of the 20th and 21st century. So for him to take on a period biopic set in the 18th century and basically be called perfect casting in reviews is such a major triumph for this actor, who I've always considered one of our more undervalued acting legends. I feel like Douglas is getting better reviews than the show itself, but with currently 70% on Rotten Tomatoes (with 23 reviews), the show is still in the range that he can win another Emmy for.
And he's still attached to play Ronald Reagan opposite Christoph Waltz in Reagan & Gorbachev. Again, Mike has the range to crush this part.

Mike is surprisingly adept at biopics. His best performance may be as Liberace in Behind The Candelebra, another wildly against type turn for an actor mostly known for his aggressively heterosexual roles to embrace camp, but do it sensitively. He swept the TV awards and won the Emmy for his performance, but had the film gotten a theatrical release as originally planned, I believe Douglas would have won his 2nd Best Actor Oscar for Liberace ( yes, I think he'd have beaten Matthew McConaughey in The Dallas Buyers Club).
Douglas is a 10 time Emmy nominated Actor. Didn't realise he was nodded that much. Impressive. His nominations were mostly for his first big 1970's TV role, The Streets Of San Francisco & The Kominsky Method.

Wow, didn't realize he was nearly 80. Well, I believe the first time I saw Michael in a movie was Romancing the Stone.

Falling Down is his crowning achievement on film ( Behind The Candelebra may be his crowning achievement on film overall, but it counts as TV). He's miles better than that year's Best Actor winner ( Tom Hanks in Philadelphia), and I'd take Douglas over the other nominees as well. D-Fens is such an iconic character for that decade. I'd also nominate Mike for The American President.

He was really fun to watch in Falling Down... and I haven't seen his Soderbergh yet but Wonder Boys may remain my favorite of his. Effortless and beautiful work.

Is Michael part of the one and done club? I mean, he's still in top form as an actor when you go by the acclaim he's gotten for The Kominsky Method and now Franklin, so in theory, he could pick up another Oscar nomination quite easily, considering his status in the industry. I just don't know if he's going to get cast in a film that will get him to the Oscars again, since he's so focused on TV, where there are still good and lead roles for actors his age. If he could get a nice supporting role for a major auteur's film, I could see him getting nominated again. Maybe even winning. But time isn't really on his side. But Anthony Hopkins aside, very few actors in his age group are delivering at a high level as consistently as Mike. Maybe he can get in something like The Father and win his 2nd Best Actor Oscar.

To be fair, the British mini-series on which Traffic was based on ( called Traffik) is much better. Great performances by Bill Paterson, Lindsay Duncan & Julia Ormond.

The more I think about it, the more I hope Mike wins a 2nd Oscar ( well, 2nd acting Oscar. He's already got 2 Oscars, but one was for producing One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest). His career absolutely deserves it, and he's been robbed of several nominations after his win for Wall Street. He should be at minimum around the 4/5 nomination mark. A 2nd win would help make up for all those nominations he should have gotten. Even his performances in The Game and The War Of The Roses would have made fine nominations.

Ok. How do you justify he didnt deserve to win for Wonder Boys? Unless you're one of those Crowe/Gladiator fanboys. Crowe was the man from 97-01, but that superficial glint of machismo is easily the worst of his 4 main performances from 97-01.

He had one of the best one-two combos of this century in 2000 with Traffic and Wonderboys. Both fantastic performances.

His Gordon Gekko is a brillant and iconic performance and with the growing popularity of the Trading, Crypto Market, etc... it's a performance that regained attention and talk over the years, sometimes though memes, quotes... I like when this happens.

I like when this happens. Same. It sometimes feels right, as if that's the performance that should have won, because it's had the greatest lasting impact on popular culture and maintains relevancy.
