This was said on this board yesterday : "To me, Sam Jackson is at least as good an actor (and maybe better) as the very similar ( and somewhat overrated) Jack Nicholson"Now this is - to me - ridiculous - the only 3 American actors - imo - "at least as good" as Nicholson - and its arguable actually - are DePac, Brando - ................ ever ..........and there are a whole bunch of guys in between SLJ and Nicholson.......like dozens and dozens - to me..........but that's just me ..............and who am I but a MAR legend and what not Maybe the board feels diferently ......so let's do a poll ...........why not..............choose your balding Pop Culture Icon........

Nicholson spent so much of the last 25 years of his career coasting that I think too many people forget/ignore just how good he was prior to that second Oscar, and just how good he occasionally still woke up and proved he could be after that point. Jackson is in a similar boat, though the work prior to the coasting is less, and the reawakenings are fewer... If we're just asking who's a more charismatic and watchable movie star then that's a close one. If we're asking who's a better actor... Not so much.

Why do I feel like I'm giving everyone material lately to start fresh threads or topics. Y'all really should pay me. Or at least thank me. Anyway, I've already covered this. It's close. Flip a coin close. Of course this board won't feel the same. You don't need a poll to validate everything you feel or hear. Nicholson will easily beat Jackson in the MAR echo chamber, and I knew it'd be a minority opinion here when I said it, but they are both personality stars to the nth degree . And both tend to favor surface charisma and force of personality over digging deep emotionally ( though they can). I wouldn't be interested in watching either of them do King Lear.Jack is a great movie star and also a good actor, but other than his Oscar nomination record, I've never really seen why he's a nailed on GOAT actor. He can't do stage, he can't do the classics, has he ever even played a non-American?....he's a charisma monster with a nice bag of tricks, but the more I watched of him, the less impressive it became to me. He's no Gene Hackman.

Oh man, Nicholson by a country mile. Jackson is always watchable and can undoubtedly be brilliant (thank you, QT... better give him a nice part in The Movie Critic!) but Nicholson is just on another level. I recently ranked all of Nicholson's performances I've seen and was a little gobsmacked by how much greatness I found there (I just never really thought about his filmography as one entity before). Just look at his early 1970s run: Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Carnal Knowledge, The King of Marvin Gardens, The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I mean, since this board of ours is so obsessed with actors, this collection of performances put together should by all means be resulting in erections all over the world right now. We are an international bunch, right?

I don't think Pacino was much of a fan of Cuckoo's Nest or Nicholson in it.
Nicholson's entertaining, but I dunno....the cool, crazy guy thing people love so much from him just began to feel really schticky to me. And I went through a big Nicholson phase, where I was devouring everything he did. He's a legend, but I've always put him a tier below DeNiro, Pacino, Hackman and Hoffman as an actor. He may be a better movie star than all of them though.

I've seen Sam Jackson enough times (and in enough good things) to call him "fam" almost... but his A-tier set of performances equals to Nicholson's B-tiers, sorry.

Nicholson for the undeniable strength of his best stuff, but playing devil's advocate there are as many times his shtick didn't work than it did. For every Five Easy Pieces and Chinatown you get a Terms of Endearment or Prizzi's Honor. His best performances are the ones where he's kept on a short leash, conversely the opposite is true of SLJ who thrives (even in bad projects) on his over the top persona. He's probably had a lot more bad films, but IMO Nicholson's done iffy work in otherwise "good" (or overrated) projects like As Good As It Gets, aforementioned Prizzi's (kind of unwatchable tbh), The Depahted.
Jackson's soulful performance in Black Snake Moan isn't talked about enough tbh.

Yes, this is not close. Carnal Knowledge, Chinatown, Cuckoo's Nest, The Shining, A Few Good Men, even Batman are all better than anything from SLJ. Jack's a top ten actor ever.

Nicholson I think has a deeper reservoir to go to and more top shelf performances. Jackson I'd say has a higher floor as he figured out his movie star persona pretty quickly and finely tuned it right away, while kooky Jack took a decade to find his screen presence and still could have Man Trouble every now and then when established. So my vote goes Nicholson.

Jackson, for me. He repeats himself too frequently, but can always manifest some strong dramatic work (The Sunset Limited, Resurrecting the Champ, The Hateful Eight, etc.). Nicholson became a cartoon and stuck to it.

Nicholson will easily beat Jackson in the MAR echo chamber, and I knew it'd be a minority opinion here when I said it, It’d be a minority opinion anywhere You'd be surprised. In the real world, Samuel L Jackson is a lotta people's favorite actor, and those lotta people would pick him over Jack . Maybe you might consider them tasteless yokels for doing so, but it does happen outside this bubble. Same goes for Morgan Freeman, who is also much more popular and beloved/respected than most people on MAR think . Those two don't really turn up on GOAT debates or whatever on places like this, but they win a lot of popularity contests. Like this 2024 YouGov Poll, which has Freeman as the most popular actor of all time, with Jackson as the 2nd most popular actor of all time.

Where's your acting degree? Yeah, that's what I thought. It's all opinions and viewpoints. Anyone who watches films/TV/theatre is allowed to have one, not just the 20 or so people on MAR who share your particular view. Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of fans, who have bought tickets to watch both Sam and Jack, may prefer Sam as an actor. It's really not out of the realm of possibility. But again, when you get the same 20 odd people going along with a similar view all the time, it becomes a bubble and you don't realise there's a whole world of people who might think differently.
No skin off my nose at the end of the day. I think Sam would fare well against Jack in some acting polls, depending on where you ask,. Obviously not here though

Where's your acting degree?
Well that isn't the point ^ - the point is this "It's all opinions and viewpoints." and MAR has voted for one actor here much more than the other and a "YOUGUV" poll of popularity is utterly meaningless to a question of who's "better" on MAR.......as subjective as "better" is........if you want to list a poll that shows SLJ ranked as a BETTER ACTOR - that would be relevant.......and that's cool........
Back to the poll.....25 votes so far - poll is opn all month btw

Wonder if Shea Serrano lurks on MAR. Because this sounds almost too conveniently aimed at us Nice to see Sam Jackson get his respect from a serious cultural commentator.
