This is just me and maybe I'm wrong but it feels like nobody here really likes Mark Wahlberg and Ben Affleck... well except me.
Maybe a few moderate likers but no serious devotees. I wouldnt call myself a devotee because most of Wahlberg's stuff is unwatchable but I never miss Pain & Gain, Three Kings, The Fighter, or Planet of the Apes on TV.
As for Affleck, you damn right I like Chasing Amy, Armageddon, Gone Baby Gone, and Batman & Superman. Those are shelf classics if you ask me. And Daredevil and Jersey Girl I probably wouldnt miss on TV either tho those last 2 probably arent movies that I would own on DVD, but just thinking in my head how many decent movies he actually has.

Not as extreme as Affleck / Wahlberg Both often (not always) hated: * Sean Penn through 2008 was the best film actor of that weak generation of 80s US Americans - he's been passed with his 15 year collapse (comeback pending?) but the shit he gets for his GREAT period is just baffling to me...... * Depardieu - is one the great actors in world film history - gets called a rapist regularly on MAR (never set foot in a courtroom ONE time for anything like that ffs atm), a fat pig, a slob.....there are very few living American actors who can stand with his top 20 - and I'm talking very few.....I think I had him 5th or 6th in our GOAT poll .....his late 70s-early 90s run is as great a run as any actor has had .....yeah in that period he was THAT great..... More like Affleck / Wahlberg: * Steve Carrell is an Oscar nominee but everybody sort of makes a sour face if you say he's REALLY interesting........he's playing Uncle Vanya on Broadway .......that is a genuine risk........like he could be laughably bad.....he could be great ......and he's doing it ON Broadway.....he's ~ 60 .....there's no "need" for him to try that........God Bless Him......

You're stretching it, man. Nobody hates Gerard. I dont know about the extent of his guilt, tho - to put him in the Polanski category or not. As for Penn, I think people just hate his win for Mystic River and that blinds them to the rest of his work. And they dont like him in I Am Sam either....but I don't either honestly. But beyond those 2, I think you're right. It does seem like hes not talked about as much as he was 15 years ago. People still talk about Crowe even if hes been bad longer. I wouldve said Spacey too but it seems people still like Se7en and LA Confidential. I dunno...I definitely agree with you that Penn feels a bit.... faded? Or forgotten..is the word?

I quite like Ben Affleck. A solid actor who's only gotten better with time, shows great self-awareness, and pivoted into being a damn good director. Good Will Hunting is a favorite so I could never dislike him.
For a good while, Anne Hathaway and Adam Sandler were actors this would qualify for but it seems the hate for them has died down as the hysteria over the former went past expiration and the latter reminded everyone he can actually do great work. Similarly, I expect the pendulum to swing back for Bradley Cooper but I still generally like him even if I agree Maestro was a misshapen vanity project.

Think Penn's issue has to do with a combination of his off-screen behavior (specifically the Madonna abuse allegations, which despite her own denial has a life of its own online) and the fact he doesn't really have many classics to keep him afloat during a down period. He's got Fast Times as a teen classic but not a major classic and Carlito's Way is well-liked but lacking the grand respect of Blow Out or the cultural appeal of Carrie and Scarface.

Gwyneth Paltrow is the first name that came to mind for me... I think she's a genuinely great actress, and there's absolutely nothing malicious in her offscreen persona...

I’ve loved her in everything I watch her in, she has such a natural screen pressence especially for period pieces, and can also pivot to the more challenging roles so believably. I find it so difficult to reconcile her off screen persona, because she comes off as grounded, relatable, self aware almost for interviews but then we have Goop and I just don’t get it Gwenyth. I’ll add Christian Bale to the list. Love him consistently and enjoy the projects he picks (minus Amsterdam). but people don’t tend to cite him amongst their favorites and have a begrudging attitude about his talent. Maybe because of the behind the scenes temper tantrums idk

Michael Fassbender – his career post-2015 has been underwhelming, but I think he has a handful of genuinely great performances (including The Killer).
Robert Downey Jr. – gets a lot of shit for letting himself be swallowed by Marvel for over a decade, but I’ve honestly always enjoyed him as Tony Stark, and I’m a big fan of all his Oscar-nominated performances (and his win). Tremendously likeable in interviews, and just a ball of charisma. Between Oppenheimer and his upcoming performance in The Sympathizer, I’m hoping he continues to be more adventurous in his project choices.
