This is a pet issue with me - regardless of who you are - in general the human mind compartmentalizes actors into "5 or 6" - that's because we remember actors at a peak and in movies no one cranks out 2 great ones every year for 5 years in a row....you can be great 10 times.......but we knock it down ......... So you can be De Niro and have closer to 20 ......or Pacino and have more than any male actor imo and in our "collective" mind it's always the same 5 or 6......this AGAIN is the incredible Pain In The Ass Daniel Day-Lewis achievement - he only did ~19 roles - 6 or 7 are great (his nods and The Boxer) and yet THAT places him - for some (not quite for me) at that "highest level ever" because his peaks ARE at the highest level and everyone gets rated on about 6 anyway......this is one of the reasons I started that thread the other day on DDL - the GOAT (to some) almost NEVER played a contemporary role.......almost no one commented........wtf MAR - unimpressive and shit On the other hand an actor doesn't have to KEEP being great - Sean Penn was great through 2008........Dustin Hoffman was great through 1988 on film.....George C. Scott was as great as any American, ever - from '59-'71...........do I rank them as highly as I would if they continued to be great? No.........but I personally rank them a lot higher than people who were great more often.......but never as great..... George C. Scott holding up 5 Fingers........proving the pacinoyes "5 or 6 rule" :

It doesn't work that way. It's not a numbers game. It's about what the performances evoke and how we respond to them. Someone can give a technically flawless performance but if I don't respond to it or find myself believing them, then it has failed.
That's why all this "GOAT" discussion is inherently meaningless. We all have our favourites, and that's fine. And yes, it's fun to try to one-up each other's favourites by throwing out stats like filmographies, awards, Twitter polls, etc. But at the end of the day, there's no right answer.

Idk about 5-6, I used to think top 10 would always be a proper standard but alot of people I like won't make it that way (actresses, especially and unfortunately)... and I took 5 from Drake the CA guy. b. I for one didn't comment on DDL further than that cause it'd look like yet another fawning over him... it adds to that dreamy, un-everydaness quality of him. c. "This is a pet issue with me" Oh I KNOW it's an issue with you, mr. but does he have 7 masterpieces?! you be the one to put this kinda thinking in my head you sob! I'm both a messier and happier person bc of you

Indeed ^ .......and that even applies in Sports which is far more easier to calculate.........I mean look at this dumbass - GTFO here Geno "the numbers" are she gets outscored by more than 10 a game and the other girl leads the country in assists again too........ and the other girls is waaaaaaaay more fun to watch (and I like Paige but noooooooooo).........but hey everybody can have a wrong opinion............. It's just in acting more people have wrong ones..........and that's..........ok............

I'll tell you, the truth is, ONE IS ENOUGH, especially it's an all timer performance. And it changes forever even your perception of that actor, for example i'll go with the most cliché ones and my personal favorite performances
DeNiro (Taxi Driver)
Streep (Sophie's Choice)
Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
Pacino (The Godfather Part 2)
Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street)
Phoenix (The Master)
Washington (Training Day)
Bale (The Fighter)
Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut)
Winslet (Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind)

Lots. More the merrier style.
That's why Pacino-Huppert-Cage are my favs... and why Blanchett/Dafoe would join them as my five favs of the century. Combined they have like thirty movies coming out this year, woooooo. I tend to like very active and actively interesting actors... weirdo, experimenters, willing to eat up the screen and leave no crumbs behind. You gotta sleuth for them but James Earl Jones has dozens of great perfs, some really odd stuff, and he's skyrocketed for me over the last few years.
DDL & Al Freeman Jr are examples of guys who I can't call favs but I really wish did more. They're basically genius-level talents.... but I feel shortchanged... Only a couple a great perfs? That's a lot of coffee grounds of talent left unpercolated.

Now, what percentage of your favorite/targeted actor's filmography you watch? pacinoyes * I've seen every movie for plenty of actors who aren't my favorites - I've seen every performance Denzel Washington gave on TV and Film and I've seen him more times onstage than anyone on MAR (or IMDB) and I like him a lot but he ain't a "favorite" ......and he's not the only actor like that.......though I haven't seen every episode of St. Elsewhere maybe * As for my favorites - every Brando multiple times.........every Pacino multiple times, on stage a lot.......I've seen Gigli like 4 times and shit ..........I have not seen Knox Goes Away yet though.........every Streep at least once * I've seen many, many Huppert's but not all ........I saw one of her most daring performances - and that's saying a lot - in the last couple years that was VERY hard to find - My Little Princess.........which made me deliriously happy.......and sad because there are many ones still to discover I think.......sigh.....never saw her on stage..........

Now, what percentage of your favorite/targeted actor's filmography you watch? with Mattsby I think it's 100 If we were going by just their leading roles, it'd be a lot of them. I try to see all of those from my favs as soon as possible. Otherwise, yeah...Pacino 100%. Depp too. Getting close with Cage, De Niro, Bab Stanwyck... Some special cases like Eric Roberts, I've seen 40 of his movies but that's only like....4% of his filmography. Lots not in my tops but by chance, childhood overlap or w/e, I've seen almost all of Cusack, Cruise, Sandler, Eddie Murphy...etc.

I guess you'd need around 5 good performances for me to call you a "good actor". But I'd probably say it if you were truly good enough even one time. Somebody like Nic Cage I only really like 3 times but he's good enough those times for my opinion to be net positive I guess.

Now, what percentage of your favorite/targeted actor's filmography you watch? with Mattsby I think it's 100 stephen pacinoyes The only one of my favorites from whom I’ve seen everything is Chastain (because I’m, you know, obsessed and stuff), though I don’t think I’ll be watching The 355 or The Color of Time three more times or anything. Mother’s Instinct is the only thing I haven’t seen yet (no US release date yet wtf), and I’ve even watched her early small TV roles. Just recently found the unaired pilot for the 2005 Dark Shadows series that she appeared in. Never got picked up, so we were denied young Jessica Chastain as a vampire (at least we have Salome, which is the closest thing!):
